MEMPHIS, Tenn.- In its final game of the calendar year, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team went on the road and held off Christian Brothers in a 71-65 final Monday at Canale Arena. The one-two punch of
Jessica Canary and
Samantha Meissel (pictured) combined for 40 points to help the Greyhounds hold off a persistent Lady Buccaneers squad.
The Hounds (12-2) quickly went down 4-0 to start the game before Meissel got the offense going with three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. UIndy continued to roll by hitting seven of its first nine shots from the floor to earn a 17-9 advantage and force a Bucs timeout.
Coming out of the stoppage, both teams experienced a two-minute scoring drought, but with 10:51 to go, CBU sophomore Katie Hume nailed a triple to inch the Lady Buccaneers closer.
Christian Brothers (6-4) went on to hit eight of its final 14 shots of the opening frame to trim the Greyhounds lead to three at the break. The Lady Bucs drained four threes in that span, including one at the buzzer, to head into the locker room down 32-29.
As it did in the first half, UIndy continued its solid overall field-goal shooting, but could not pull away from its hosts. The Greyhounds finished the contest shooting at a .545 clip from the floor, including a robust 19-for-25 from inside the arc, but CBU maintained its hot hand and hit some timely three to stay in it.
The Hounds owned at least a three-possession lead through the majority of the second half and led by as many 11, but a last-minute spurt by the Lady Bucs kept it interesting. With UIndy up 10 with 90 seconds to go, CBU managed two 3s and two steals to help cut it to five.
The home team would not get closer as UIndy, aided by five made free throws in the final 50 seconds, endured the storm to pick up its fourth win in a row.
Meissel finished with a team-high 21 points and two blocks, Canary added 19 points and five rebounds, and
Katie Dewey and
Sarah Fenneman each scored 11.
UIndy begins the meat of its schedule after the New Year. The Greyhounds finish their 2008-09 slate with 16 straight GLVC contests, starting with a trek to Kentucky Wesleyan Jan. 2.
