On Tap: The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team begins the New Year by playing the first two of 16-straight conference games, starting with GLVC East foe Kentucky Wesleyan Friday, Jan. 2. Riding a four-game win streak, UIndy enters the meat of its conference schedule with a 1-1 league record, part of a 12-2 overall mark.
About Kentucky Wesleyan: The Lady Panthers sport a 6-5 record, including a 4-1 mark at home. KWC's only loss at the Sportscenter came at the hands of Ferris State in the season opener as FSU edged the Panthers 83-77 Nov. 15.
Sixth-year head coach Ron Williams has four players with double-digit scoring averages, led by junior Candace Garrett's 13.2 ppg. Senior Whitney Waddell puts up 11.8 points per contest and tops the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg), steals (1.9 spg), and blocks (1.3 bpg). Point guard Jennifer Coronelli ranks second in the conference with 4.8 assists per game.
Hounds vs. Panthers: Though it has just one win in the previous six meetings, UIndy holds a 29-20 advantage in the all-time series. That win came Feb. 28 of last season when the Hounds downed KWC
75-61 at Nicoson Hall. Then freshman
Samantha Meissel torched the Panthers with a season-high 25 points on 12-of-21 shooting.
About Southern Indiana: By picking up his 160th career win Monday, Screaming Eagles head coach Rick Stein became the program's all-time winningest coach. Including a 7-4 record this year, Stein has compiled a .586 winning percentage in his nine-plus seasons at Southern Indiana. Stein was the head assistant at USI in 1997 when senior
LeAnn Freeland helped lead the Eagles to the NCAA championship game.
Unbeaten in five home games this season, USI is led by sophomore Eileen Young. The 5-5 guard paces the squad in scoring (13.0 ppg) and free throw shooting (.833) while also grabbing nearly as many offensive rebounds (22) as defensive (24). Senior Brittany Neuman ranks second in the league with 8.1 rebounds per game.
Hounds vs. Screaming Eagles: The Greyhounds have taken four of the last five meetings with USI and own a 30-24 edge overall. UIndy defeated the Eagles
63-56 on their home court last year. Meissel hit all 13 of her foul shots that night on the way to 17 points.
Last Time Out: In its final game of the calendar year, UIndy went on the road and held off Christian Brothers in a
71-65 final Dec. 22 at Canale Arena. The one-two punch of
Jessica Canary and
Samantha Meissel combined for 40 points to help the Greyhounds hold off a persistent Lady Buccaneers squad.
GLVC POTW: Senior
Isabell Rhenwrick recently became the first Greyhound to earn Player of the Week honors from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Gary, Ind. native posted her first career double-double to help UIndy to a 84-50 rout of visiting Lincoln Memorial Dec. 20. Rhenwrick tallied season highs with 15 points and 11 boards and fell just three assists shy of becoming the second player in program history to notch a triple-double. Her rebound total set a new personal best for the team's lone senior. She connected on 5-of-8 (.625) field goal attempts while sinking all four shots from the foul line, also adding a career-high tying seven assists and three steals to her stat line.
Free Points: By sinking foul shots at a .779 clip, the Greyhounds top the GLVC in free throw shooting.
Jessica Canary (.854) ranks sixth in the league in the category and is followed closely by
Megan Gardner (.848). The pair have helped UIndy to make more foul shots than its opponents have attempted.
No GLVC, No Problem: With no regular-season out-of-league games remaining, UIndy finished with a solid 11-1 record versus non-conference opponents this season. The Greyhounds won its first eight such contests before recording its only out-of-conference loss at the UIndy Thanksgiving Classic Nov. 29. The Hounds fell 77-63 to then 15th-ranked Hillsdale.
