Greyhounds impressive at House of Champions meet

INDIANAPOLIS-  The Greyhound swimming and diving teams embarked on the two-day House of Champions Invite, contested at the IU Natatorium downtown Friday and Saturday.  The meet featured predominantly NCAA Division I teams including Ball State, Butler, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and host IUPUI.  15 of the 40 events were won by UIndy athletes.

Baris Ilhan was the winner of the 500 freestyle in an NCAA B-cut time of 4:39.31. Alican Alacli just missed his B-cut with a seventh-place in that swim.  Manuel Stiem also won the 200 individual medley with his 1:56.02 time (B-cut).  Marios Panagi (21.01) and Alex Arestis (21.32) each earned B-cuts in the 50 freestyle, taking second and fourth, respectively.  Austin Biefnes was the winner in the 400 IM, earning a B-cut with a 4:09.39 time.  Stiem grabbed a win and an automatic qualifier with a 49.06 time in the 100 butterfly.  Adam Petro was runner-up in the event and scored a B-cut with a 51.49.  Arestis won the 200 free with a 1:42.41 for another B-standard.  Panagi took first in the 100 backstroke and garnered a B-cut with his 51.37 time.  The 1,650 freestyle featured a one-two UIndy finish with Alacli etching an A-standard (15:49.52) and Ilhan getting a B-cut (16:09.45).  Arestis added a third B-cut with his second place showing in the 100 freestyle (47.00).  Stiem had a B-cut (2:09.03) in his win in the 200 breaststroke.  Petro won the 200 butterfly with his B-standard clocking of 1:52.62. 

The men's relay teams were impressive, winning three of the relay events.  The 400 medley relay team will be going to nationals, after their A-cut performance in cruising to the win (3:24.19).  The 200 medley relay will do the same, posting another qualifying time with a 1:32.69 clocking and another win for UIndy.  The 400 free relay squad closed the meet with another A-standard and a 3:04.07 time.

Erica Smith won the 200 IM, earning a B-cut in the process (2:08.96).  She later won the 100 butterfly with another B-cut performance (57.40) and took third in the 200 butterfly for a third B-cut (2:09.13).  The 200 backstroke went to Ozlem Taskin with her B-cut time of 2:07.66. 

UIndy will break from competition for the next month before returning home to host the UIndy Invitational Jan. 9-10 at Ruth Lilly Center Pool.
