DID YOU KNOW?: The Greyhound women's basketball team is ranked fourth in the Division II Bulletin Preseason poll. The national rankings, released last week, feature four Midwest Region teams in the top 25, including top billing for Michigan Tech.
Women's Soccer: UIndy remains tied atop the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings splitting a pair of league games. Friday, the Hounds blanked Illinois-Springfield 1-0 on a Shelby Spinelli goal. The tables were turned Sunday, however, as the Hounds found themselves on the losing end of a 1-0 decision to Quincy. The loss put a logjam at the top of the table with five schools owning similar 8-2 marks in league play. UIndy takes to the road for the final time in the regular season, traveling to Rockhurst and Drury.
Men's Soccer: The men's soccer team is making a push up the standings in hopes to qualify for the postseason conference tournament. The Hounds followed a 3-1 win over Illinois-Springfield Friday with a 2-1 overtime victory vs. Quincy Sunday. Freshman forward Roger Lee scored three goals this week, including both Sunday to get UIndy to 6-5-2, and 4-5-1 in GLVC play. The Hounds have key matches this week, battling Rockhurst, who currently sits in sixth place and undefeated Drury Sunday.
Volleyball: UIndy, still ranked No. 12 in the AVCA national poll, begins a four-match non-conference slate this week hosting Taylor at Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. The Hounds are winners of eight straight and have a 22-1 overall mark. This past week, UIndy dispatched of Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan for their sixth straight sweep win. The GLIAC/GLVC Crossover tournament commences Friday in Lansing, Mich. Indianapolis draws Northern Michigan and Hillsdale on the first day of the tournament and will play Saginaw Valley State Saturday.
Football: Freshmen Patrick Bourne and Mar'Quone Edmonds each had a pair of touchdowns as the visiting Greyhounds cruised past host Ferris State, 34-7 at Top Taggart Field Saturday afternoon. The Hounds broke a five-game slump with the win and kept FSU winless in the conference on the season. The Greyhounds allowed just a single third-down conversion all day (1-for-12) and squandered just 201 total yards, had three takeaways and totaled five sacks on the afternoon. Five different Hounds were in on tackles for loss during the win (7.0 TFL). Bourne had a career-high 127 yards rushing and two TD while QB Rob Doyle was 18-for-28 for 106 yards with 2 TD and an INT. The Greyhounds will play their final two home games the following two Saturdays, hosting Michigan Tech before Oct. 24th's homecoming tilt with Tiffin. Both games are 6:00 p.m. starts.
Women's Golf: Ranked fifth in the latest Golf World Division II rankings, the Greyhounds finished fourth of 13 teams at the Nova Southeastern Shark Classic Tuesday. The tourney featured five of top eight ranked schools in Division II. Lyndsay McBride shot 74 and 73 to tie for fourth individually. The fall season comes to a close for the Greyhounds, who won three team titles and grabbed second three more times in seven fall tournaments.
Men's Golf: The 13th-ranked Greyhounds took third at the Nova Southeastern Shark Classic Tuesday in a group of 13 quality teams. Blair Webb shot a final-round 69 to place fourth individually (72-73-69). UIndy finished the fall portion of its schedule with three third-place finishes and three fourth-place showings in its seven tournaments.
Men's & Women's Cross Country: The UIndy cross country teams each competed in shorter races Saturday as they gear up for the Great Lakes Valley Conference meet in two weeks. The women won the four-kilometer race while the men took second in the five-kilometer run at the Lucian Rosa Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside. A total of 29 runners competed with Katherine Wilhelm, who came out on top. She was clocked in 14:53 and led throughout the race. Mark Martinez was the top collegian in the men's race, crossing in 16:03. UIndy's next confirmed race on the docket is the GLVC Championship meet, scheduled for Oct. 24 in Louisville, Ky.
Men's Tennis: The UIndy men's tennis team evened its record with a pair of non-conference wins this weekend. The Hounds defeated Ohio Dominican 6-3 on Saturday and bested host Tiffin 8-1 Sunday to improve to 2-2 overall on the season. The doubles teams were impressive, going 6-0 on the weekend. The Greyhounds will host the annual alumni event this Sunday at the UIndy Tennis Center.
Swimming and Diving: The Greyhound swimming and diving season is just underway and already UIndy is compiling a list of qualifiers for the season-ending NCAA Championship meet. Opening the season against four NCAA Division I schools at the annual Indiana Intercollegiate meet at Purdue University Saturday, both the men and women finished in third place while four swimmers notched qualifying times. Guy Kogel grabbed the first automatic qualifying time, winning the 100 butterfly in impressive fashion (49.93), two-thirds of a second ahead of the field. Austin Biefnes was second in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:56.40 for an NCAA B-cut time standard. Maura Donahue took second in the 200 IM and registered an NCAA B-cut in the process (2:11.93). She later snagged another B-time by winning the 500 free (5:05.99). Erica Smith picked up the fifth B-cut and took third with her 58.32 performance in the 100 butterfly.
