Did you know?: Junior volleyballer Lyndsay Callahan etched her 1,000th career kill last week, becoming just the seventh Greyhound ever to achieve that mark.
Football: The Greyhound defense generated five takeaways to help UIndy cruise to a 38-20 win over Michigan Tech Saturday. It marked the first time UIndy has registered that many takeaways since the 2005 season (at Wayne State). Senior co-captain J.T. Owens had a pair of interceptions and returned one 42 yards for a touchdown in the victory, earning himself GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Tight end Dustin Burford had two receiving scores to help the Hounds to their second straight win. UIndy (3-5 overall) will host Tiffin this Saturday night for homecoming in the team's home finale.
Volleyball: UIndy, currently ranked tied for 11th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II poll, went 4-0 last week to extend its winning streak to a dozen. The Hounds bested Taylor 3-1 Tuesday before grabbing three more non-conference wins at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover tournament in Lansing, Michigan Friday and Saturday. The Crossover gave UIndy three more key regional wins as the Hounds beat Northern Michigan, Hillsdale and Saginaw Valley State. The Greyhounds host Bellarmine Friday and Northern Kentucky Saturday at Ruth Lilly Center.
Men's Soccer: With a 2-1 overtime win at Rockhurst Friday, UIndy remained alive for a berth in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference eight-team tournament. Freshmen Roger Lee and
Bobby Adkins each registered goals in the win. First-place Drury scored two late goals to grab a 2-0 win Sunday to put the Hounds record at 5-6-1 in GLVC play heading into the final weekend of regular season play. Indianapolis (7-6-2 overall) will host Missouri S&T and Maryville this Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Women's Soccer: UIndy plays its final two regular season games at home this weekend, hosting Missouri S&T and Maryville. Up for grabs for the Hounds is a chance to host a quarterfinal-round match in the GLVC tournament, beginning Nov. 1. UIndy currently sits at 9-3 in league play, tied for fourth, and would need to secure one of the top four spots to garner another home match in the tourney opener. Last week, the Hounds bested host Rockhurst 2-1 on an overtime tally by senior Ashley Seehase Friday. Sunday, host Drury handed the Hounds a 3-0 defeat to put UIndy's record at 12-4 overall.
Cross Country: The harriers were off last week as they gear up for the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships set for Louisville, Ky. this Saturday. Each team competed in shorter races in their last outing. The women won the four-kilometer race while the men took second in the five-kilometer run at the Lucian Rosa Invitational hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside on Oct. 10.
Men's Golf: Aided by a final-round 69 from Blair Webb, the 13th-ranked University of Indianapolis men's golf team snagged a third-place finish at the talent-rich NSU Shark Invitational last Tuesday, held at the par-72, 6,806-yard Haig Course at PGA National. His three-round score of 214 put him at two-under par, good for sole possession of fourth. The Greyhounds put their season on hold this winter but will resume competition in the spring.
Women's Golf: The fifth-ranked UIndy women's golf team placed fourth among a tough field at the NSU Shark Invitational last Tuesday, held at the par-72, 6,163-yard Palmer Course at PGA National. The field featured five of Division II's top-eight ranked teams, including top-ranked and host Nova Southeastern, who won the event by one stroke over No. 3 Rollins. Senior Lyndsay McBride continued her hot shooting as the 2009 D-II individual national champion again carded the low score for the Hounds. McBride fired scores of 74 and 73 to finish at three-over par and share fourth place. Now done for the winter, UIndy picked up three team titles this semester, with McBride also managing three wins individually. The Greyhounds will return to Florida to open the spring potion of their schedule as participants in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Springs, Fla. Mar. 9-10.
Swimming and Diving: The swimmers took the week off from competition after a very successful opening meet at Purdue University for the Indiana Intercollegiate meet on Oct. 10. Guy Kogel, who etched an NCAA A-cut in the 100 butterfly, and Maura Donahue, who nabbed B-cuts in the 200 IM and 500 free, were eached named the Division II CollegeSwimming.com National Swimmers of the Week for their performances. UIndy hosts a big tri-meet this week when Ashland, Wayne State and Truman State invade the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center pool on Friday and Saturday.
