INDIANAPOLIS - The Missouri S&T Miners topped the Greyhound men's soccer team in a pivotal Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup 1-0 on Friday evening at Key Stadium.
Both UIndy and S&T came into the game looking to improve their position in the GLVC standings and ultimately play themselves into the postseason conference tournament after this weekend's matchups, but it was the Miners that emerged victorious after a Peter Vaccaro goal in the 66th minute for the match's only tally.
Indianapolis controlled most of the action in the first half of play, out shooting S&T by a 10-2 margin, but was unable to put a ball past Miner netminder Pat McNamee. Missouri S&T could not find the mark on either of their attempts and the score remained tied at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
Vaccaro netted the game-winner for the Miners on an assist by Nicolas Solano, scoring from point blank range after a corner kick was played back into the box after an initial clear by the UIndy defense.
The Greyhounds rallied, but could not get the equalizer on a pair of opportunties late in the second half on shots by
Bobby Adkins and
Roger Lee.
Adkins led the offensive attack for the Hounds, firing six shot attempts, while Lee attempted three shots of his own.
Justin Roberts made a pair of saves in goal for UIndy in the loss and now owns a 6-6-2 record in goal.
The loss drops the Greyhounds to 7-7-2 on the season and 5-7-1 in GLVC action, while the Miners improved to 7-5-1 and 7-4-1 in the GLVC. Indianapolis will wrap up the regular season with a 2:30 PM contest on Senior Day at Key Stadium against conference newcomer Maryville University.
