Did you know?: The UIndy volleyball team has clinched its highest single-season winning percentage in the program's history. Jody Butera's squad is 32-1 (.970) heading into the postseason, topping her 2007 team that was 33-4 (.892).
Football: The Greyhound football team (4-7) wrapped-up its 2009 campaign, falling 41-14 at Northern Michigan Saturday. Sophomore Ryan Forney had 10 catches for 107 yards and finished the season ranked nation in the country in punt return average. The UIndy defense closed out the year leading the GLIAC in total defense, 17th in all of Division II. The Hounds' pass defense also was tops in the conference while Mike Dum (7th), Craig Ray (13th) and Max Davis (15th) all finished in the top 15 in tackles in the league.
Volleyball: UIndy (32-1) etched its 18th straight win last week and is now onto the postseason. The Greyhounds mowed through Saint Joseph's and Maryville to nab the second seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament and will face sixth-seeded Drury in the opener on Friday afternoon. The championships are being hosted by top-seeded Lewis, who went undefeated through the league schedule. Women's Soccer: UIndy (15-5) has earned its second NCAA tourney bid in the school's history, taking the fifth-seed out of the Midwest Region. The Greyhounds fell 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference semifinals last Friday. The Hounds will rematch with Bellarmine in the NCAA opener, as the Knights handed UIndy its first loss of the season, 1-0, back on Sep. 18. The winner of Friday's match will advance to take on host and top-seeded Grand Valley State on Sunday.
Cross Country: The Greyhound cross country teams ran in the final race of the season Saturday, taking part in the NCAA Regional event hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside. The UIndy men finished in 15th as a team while the women took 16th. Leading the way for the Greyhound women was Stephanie Cave as the freshman capped a solid campaign by taking 53rd in the race, crossing in 24:08. Mark Martinez was the top UIndy male placer, taking 44th with a 34:49 time.
Swimming and Diving: The Greyhounds compete next at the IUPUI House of Champions Invite Nov. 13-14 at the IU Natatorium downtown. In their last appearance, the Hounds welcomed some of the nation's top talent to the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center Oct. 23 and 24, hosting Ashland, Truman State and Wayne State. For the meet, four different UIndy athletes earned NCAA time standards, including one A-cut (Guy Kogel-100 fly). Kogel also added B-times in the 100 and 200 free. Maura Donahue had B-cuts in the 100, 200, 500 and 1000 free while Erica Smith added three "B" times of her own (100 and 200 fly, 200 IM). Austin Biefnes made it a dozen time standards for the Greyhounds with a pair of B-cuts (200 and 400 IM). Kogel and Donahue were each named the CollegeSwimming.com Division II Swimmers of the Week for their efforts.
Men's Basketball: UIndy dropped an 82-67 decision at Indiana State in the final preseason tuneup in exhibition play Saturday. Senor Larry Woods led the Hounds with 14 points while Darius Adams chipped-in a game-high four steals.
With the loss, the Greyhounds conclude their exhibition slate with a 1-1 record and will tip-off their regular season schedule when they host The College of Mount St. Joseph Sunday at 5:30 in Nicoson Hall.
Women's Basketball: Xavier used a defensive first-half as a springboard to a 76-48 exhibition win over the UIndy women's basketball team at the Cintas Center Saturday afternoon. The Hounds did not shoot the ball particularly well, connecting on 21.1 percent for the game, but forced 18 Xavier turnovers and grabbed 10 steals. The second-half effort was key in UIndy only being outscored by four in the second half, 40-36. Jessica Canary had 15 points for UIndy. The Hounds open their regular season Sunday with a home game against St. Catharine's. Tip time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
Wrestling: New head coach Jason Warthan officially gets his first season at the helm underway this Sunday, heading to East Lansing, Mich. for the Michigan State Open. Warthan, a former Greyhound All-American grappler himself (2000), welcomes 15 returners and four starters back in the mix for the Greyhounds.
