On tap:  The Greyhounds open the 2009-10 season with a pair of non-NCAA Division II foes this week in Mount Saint Joseph and Southern Illinois.  MSJ hails from the D-III Heartland Athletic Conference while the Salukis are part of the D-I Missouri Valley Conference.  The games are part of nine non-conference games for the Greyhounds this season.

About MSJ:  The Lions are led by coach Larry Cox, who is in his 12th season with the Mounts.  Cox's Lions were 6-19 last year and lost 10 straight to end the campaign.

About Southern Illinois:  Head Coach Chris Lowery begins his sixth season at the helm of the Saluki program.  His teams have made the NCAA tournament three times (2005,06,07) and the SIU team has more NCAA wins and appearances of any Missouri Valley Conference school this decade.

UIndy Head Coach Stan Gouard Stan Gouard brings a 9-18 record into his second campaign as the Greyhound front man.  He previously spent three years as an assistant coach at Indiana State following his three-year stint as an assistant at UIndy.  While at Indianapolis, Gouard was part of the staff that helped the Hounds to a 47-31 record, advancing to the NCAA tournament all three seasons.

GLVC “B”East:  The Great Lakes Valley Conference, with the additions of Maryville and Illinois-Springfield, has gone to a 15-team league with three divisions for basketball.  It would be tough to find a tougher division of hoops than in the GLVC East, where UIndy will battle four teams that were nationally-ranked at one point last season.  Bellarmine, Northern Kentucky, Southern Indiana and Kentucky Wesleyan all advanced to the NCAA tournament last season.  To boot, Bellarmine goes into the 2009-10 campaign as the top team in the Division II Bulletin Preseason poll.

Into the Woods:  Senior Larry Woods is the team's highest returning scorer, averaging 10.3 points per contest.  In 23 games played, Woods scored in double figures 10 times, scoring a season-high 26 at Saginaw Valley State (Dec. 22).

Thunder-Struck:  Senior Sergey Struck returns for his final campaign, a year after making nine starts last season.  Struck averaged 5.6 ppg and 3.1 rpg.  His best game came in a 9-for-10 effort for 24 points in a Dec. 17 win over Brescia.

Knight Rider:  Senior Dijon Knight played in 16 games off-the-bench last season, posting 2.4 points per contest.  Knight's season high was an 11-point effort against Salem International (Dec. 13).

Double Duty:  Sophomore Paul Corsaro will be switching uniforms, taking off his shoulder pads and returning to the hardwood for the hoops season.  Corsaro also plays football for the Greyhounds, buckling the chin strap to play quarterback on the gridiron.  This past season, Corsaro was 14-for-27 for 69 yards with 2 TD and 2 INTs.  He also had 77 yards rushing and two scores.

Devin's 27:  Senior Devin Williams played in all 27 games last year, making starts in 13.  He averaged 3.7 points per game with his high (14) coming vs. Saint Joseph's on Jan. 31.

Exhibition Recap 09-10:  The Greyhounds played at Valparaiso and Indiana State in exhibition play this season.  At Valpo, UIndy's starting five all scored in double digits to down the NCAA Division I Crusaders, 88-83 on Nov. 1.  UIndy got contributions from its newcomers, but it was Larry Woods (20 pts, 8 reb.) that led the way for Indianapolis, leading all scorers in points and rebounds.  Ryan Sims scored 11 points in a three-minute stretch in the first half to help put the Hounds on top for good.  Sergey Struck had 18 points, Sims 13, Darius Adams had 12 and Nate Blank added 10 for the Greyhounds.  On Nov. 7, Indiana State held the Hounds to just 35.7 percent shooting from the floor to take an 82-67 win at the Hulman Center.  Woods again paced the Greyhound offense, scoring 14.  DeWann Squires chipped-in 13 points and Ryan Sims added 10 for UIndy.
