On Tap:
The 11th-ranked UIndy women’s basketball team plays it’s first road game of the season Saturday when it travels to University Center, Mich. to face Saginaw Valley State in an all-important in-region contest.  Both teams enter the match-up with a 1-0 record.

About Saginaw Valley:  Members of the rival Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Saginaw Valley State is coming off a forgettable season, as the Cardinals won just three of 27 games in Coach Shannon Baugh’s first season at the school.  Baugh returns three starters from that team, including junior Kelley Wesp and sophomore Marah Kyle, who each averaged about eight points and three rebounds per game in 2008-09.

It was the freshman who led the way in the Cardinals’ 74-63 win versus Urbana last Sunday, however, as Aysha Boston, Grace Herzog and Jasmine Kennedy combined for 42 points.  Boston led all scorers with 22 points while adding six assists and four steals, Herzog notched a double-double in her first regular season collegiate game (16 pts, 10 rbs), and Kennedy went for 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

Urbana actually led 28-27 at the break, but the Cardinals shot over 60% from the field in the second half to pull away.

Hounds vs. Cardinals:
Saturday marks the eighth time the two schools have hooked up, with Saginaw taking six of the first seven.  The last match-up took place four years ago in December of 2005, as the Cardinals came out on top 82-59 at J.E. O’Neill Arena.  The Hounds’ only win in the series came on 12/17/00 in a 66-47 final at Nicoson Hall.

Last Time Out:  Indianapolis fended off a pesky St. Catharine squad last Sunday to pick up a 66-50 win in the season opener.  The visiting Patriots were as close as three midway through the second half, but UIndy orchestrated a game-changing 15-2 run before going on to the double-digit win.

Junior Samantha Meissel (Terre Haute, Ind./Terre Haute North) went 9-for-17 from the floor to finish with a game-high 22 points, while senior Jessica Canary (Coatesville, Ind./South Putnam) stuffed the box score with 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

20/20:  Canary and Meissel each had 20-point games in the opener versus St. Catharine, marking the third time the duo accomplished the feat in the same game and the first time at home.  The pair did it twice last year when Meissel scored 26 and Canary went for 24 at Oakland City (11/19/08), followed by a Meissel output of 25 points and a Canary effort of 20 points in the GLVC Tourney semis at Quincy (3/6/09).

Two-for-One:  Canary and Meissel also share the spotlight in this note, as both are within striking distance of reaching the 1,000 mark in career points. Canary enters Saturday’s game at SVSU needed just five points to reach the milestone, while Meissel is just 20 points shy.

Of the 16 players currently in the UIndy women’s basketball 1,000-point club, only three pairs of teammates have reached the mark in the same season, while none have done so in the same game.

As the highest scoring tandem in the GLVC last season, Canary and Meissel combined to score 33.1 points per contest in 2008-09, the highest combined total by UIndy’s top two scorers since 1994-95.

Head Coach LeAnn Freeland:
In her third season at the helm, UIndy women’s basketball head coach LeAnn Freeland enters play this week sporting a 47-18 career record, good for a .723 winning percentage - the highest in program history.

Freeland has guided UIndy to back-to-back NCAA berths, including its first-ever NCAA Sweet 16 appearance last year.  In one of the tourney’s toughest regions, the Greyhounds took down a pair of top-10 teams at the 2009 Big Dance (No. 3 Hillsdale & No. 9 Quincy) before falling to 69-52 to 22nd-ranked Michigan Tech in the Midwest Regional final.

In her rookie year, Freeland won her very first game as head coach and didn’t stop winning through the first 11 contests, setting a program record for most wins to start a season. The Greyhounds finished the season with 13 conference victories and a trip to the GLVC Tournament semifinals.

A week later, in UIndy’s first NCAA appearance since 2005 and sixth overall, Freeland’s inaugural campaign ended in a one-point, first-round loss to eventual national champion and fellow GLVC-member Northern Kentucky.
