Volleyball: The ninth-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team (38-1) collected its first-ever NCAA regional championship trophy with a 25-16, 25-21, 25-13 win versus arch-rival Lewis at the Ruth Lilly Center Saturday afternoon. The win capped-off an exciting weekend that saw the host team defeat Michigan Tech, Hillsdale and finally second-seeded Lewis to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight in St. Paul, Minn. There, UIndy will face an undefeated and defending-national champion Concordia-St. Paul team that is hosting the championships Dec. 4-6. Four Hounds were named the to NCAA Midwest Region All-Tourney team: Lyndsay Callahan, Kristina Kerrigan, Cheneta Morrison and Kyleigh Turner.
Football: UIndy promoted Bob Bartolomeo to its head football coaching position Monday. After six seasons as the Greyhounds’ defensive coordinator, he will assume his new role immediately. Former coach Joe Polizzi stepped down earier this month. Coach Bart's defense ranked first in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in total defense last season.
Swimming and Diving: The UIndy men's swimming team took first while the Greyhound women were third at the Patrick Woehnker Invitational Friday and Saturday at Wabash College. NCAA-qualifying times were abundant at the meet as Indianapolis registered at least one cut in 17 of the 36 events contested. The automatic qualifiers at the meet for UIndy included the 800 free relays for both squads, Austin Biefnes in the 400 IM, Meghan Donahue's 100 and 200 back, Erica Smith's 100 and 200 fly, Guy Kogel in the 100 fly and the women's 200 free relay. A whole slew of NCAA B-cuts were generated at the meet as well with 14 different UIndy times meeting the standard. Meghan Donahue was selected the CollegeSwimming.com Division II Female Swimmer of the Week, marking the fifth time a Greyhound has won that honor this season.
Men's Basketball: Behind a double-double from point guard Darius Adams, the Greyhound men's basketball team defeated fourth-ranked Findlay, 71-63 at Nicoson Hall Saturday night. UF (2-1) had its 38-game winning streak snapped in the process, its first loss since the 2007-08 season. UIndy (2-1) had four players score in double digits with DeWann Squires pouring-in 18, Larry Woods adding 14 and Nate Blank with 10. UIndy will travel to Urbana Tuesday in the final tune-up before the start of the Great Lakes Valley Conference season. The Hounds will welcome Northern Kentucky to Nicoson Hall Dec. 3 to open league play.
Women's Basketball: In its first road game of the season, the 11th-ranked UIndy women's basketball team parlayed a big second half into a 77-59 victory versus Saginaw Valley State Saturday. The win featured a rare double milestone as junior Samantha Meissel and senior Jessica Canary each surpassed 1,000 career points in the contest. Canary and Meissel became the 17th and 18th Greyhounds, respectively, the join the 1,000-point club, with each accomplishing the feat in the Hounds’ productive second half. The duo is the fourth pair of UIndy teammates to reach the milestone in the same season but the first to do it in the same game. The Greyhounds have a busy holiday week with three home games on the slate. The ladies face Central State Tuesday night at Nicoson Hall before playing host to the four-team UIndy Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday.
Wrestling: The UIndy wrestling team finished the day with five placings at the Missouri Open on Sunday, with Alex Johns and David Lopez leading the way for the Greyhounds with a pair of second-place finishes. Johns finished as the runner-up in the Freshman/Sophomore 125 bracket, while Lopez earned the second spot in the Freshman/Sophomore 149 class. The grapplers will return to the mats on December 4 when they take part in the Little State Tournament held in Angola, Indiana. Action is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM and the two-day event will wrap up on December 5.
