On tap: The Greyhounds wrap up the 2009 schedule with the long trek to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to battle the Northern Michigan Wildcats. UIndy will look to rebound from a 19-3 setback at Ashland last week.
Series history: NMU leads the all-time series against UIndy, winning 11 of the 17 meetings. The Greyhounds claimed a 24-6 win last season and have two straight against the Wildcats.
About NMU: The Wildcats leapt out of the gate, winning five straight contests after dropping a tight season-opener against Northwood. Following the five-game streak, the 'Cats have lost three in-a-row, losing to Hillsdale, Findlay and Grand Valley State on consecutive weeks.
About NMU Head Coach Bernie Anderson: Anderson is 108-120 in his 23 years as a college head coach, including a 15-24 mark with NMU. Prior to his current tenure, Anderson was the head coach at Michigan Tech for 19 years, leading them to their first-ever NCAA postseason appearance in 2004.
About UIndy Head Coach Joe Polizzi: Polizzi, now in his 16th season, is 84-88-1 in his tenure at UIndy. Polizzi has collected eight winning seasons in that time, including three of the last four.
Regional Rankings: The final edition of the NCAA Super Regional 3 rankings before the playoff seedings are announced were released Monday. Four GLIAC teams are ranked, including: Grand Valley State (3), Saginaw Valley State (5), Hillsdale (6) and Findlay (9). Minnesota State, Mankato continues to top the rankings with the lone undefeated mark (10-0) in the region. The top six teams in each region advance to the NCAA tournament.
National Rankings: Several Greyhounds find themselves in the national rankings through seven weeks. Ryan Forney is the ninth-leading punt returner in D-II, averaging 15.6 yards per return. Mike Dum is 50th in total tackles per game (8.89) and Rob Doyle is 54th in passing efficiency (130.71).
UIn-DEE: The Greyhound defense has been stout this season, ranking among the best in the conference in several categories. UIndy ranks first in the GLIAC in pass defense (140.0 ypg), second in total defense (279.7 ypg) and third in opponent first-down conversion rate (34.8 pct.). J.T. Owens leads the league in interception return yardage (79) while three Hounds are in the top 15 in tackles: Mike Dum (7th), Craig Ray (12th) and Max Davis (15th).
Breaking the Long Ones: Sophomore Ryan Forney is among the best returnmen in the country, thanks to his habit of breaking the long one. He has three punt returns of 45+ yards this season, including a career-long 69-yarder for a score. His return yardage has helped him surpass the 1,000-yard mark in all-purpose yards this season (1,075) to lead the team.
