MARQUETTE, Mich.- Host Northern Michigan ran out to a 28-0 lead and held on for a 41-14 win at the Superior Dome Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds were held off the scoreboard in the first half, but got scores from
Stephen Geller and
Paul Corsaro in the season finale.
Despite having the ball for over 10 minutes in the opening quarter, the Greyhounds had each of their drives stall, punting three times. NMU took the lead with 5:00 on the clock when Carter Kopach found Blake Crider for a 21-yard touchdown and a 7-0 score.
The Wildcats made it 14-0 when Kopach hit Zach Nichols form 2-yards out with just under two minutes to play in the half. The ensuing kickoff was an on-sides recovered by NMU and Kopach connected with Nichols again from the two for a convincing 21-0 advantage. A fumbled kickoff return gave NMU another chance to score before the half expired, but the Greyhound defense forced a punt to send it to the locker room.
The Hounds' second possession of the second half saw them backed-up to their own 1-yardline. Junior Michel picked-off
Rob Doyle and marched 11 yards to paydirt, putting his team up, 28-0. The ensuing kickoff was returned 40 yards by
Aaron Ruth to set-up the Greyhounds' first score.
Doyle went to work on the drive, completing eight straight passes, culminating in a 12-yard strike to
Stephen Geller for a 28-7 score. Geller caught four balls in the series, three for first down yardage.
Another interception deep in Indianapolis territory gave the ball to the Cats on the 3-yardline. Mark Bossuah's run gave the home squad a 34-7 advantage. Doyle again went to the air to produce UIndy's second scoring drive. He hit on 6-of-8 attempts to get it down to the NMU 10-yardline. From there, Doyle had a pair of rushes and
Paul Corsaro eventually punched it in with a two-yard scamper to close the gap to 34-14 with 5:33 remaining. Bossuah added another touchdown run to put the game away.
Doyle finished the afternoon 25-for-41 for 226 yards with a TD and two interceptions. Ten of those balls went Forney's way, who had a game-high 107 yards receiving for the contest.
Cody Kave had eight total tackles to lead the Greyhound defensive effort.
UIndy (4-7, 3-7 GLIAC) closes out its season with the loss.
