UIndy swims teams each third at GLIAC meet

COMPLETE FINAL RESULTS

JENISON, Mich.-  The UIndy men took third while the women also finished third at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, concluded Saturday at Jenison High School.  Wayne State won the men's title and host Grand Valley State was the women's champion at the meet.  UIndy registered four GLIAC records at the 2009 championships.

WEDNESDAY
Wednesday saw Ashley Clifford shave almost a half-minute off her seed time in the 1650 freestyle, taking eighth place in an NCAA B-cut time of 18:01.57.  Alican Alacli finished second on the men's side, etching an NCAA A-cut time of 15:45.83.  Baris Ilhan took fourth in the event (16:03.64) and also registered a B-cut in the process. Brad Rissler and Keegan Hoey took 11th and 12th to pick-up more team points for the Greyhounds.

The women's 200 medley relay squad finished fifth while the men placed second to end the day's action.  The men's quartet of Marios Panagi, Eric Mundt, Manuel Stiem and Yaman Oguz touched in 1:31.72, an NCAA-qualifying effort.

THURSDAY
The women started the finals action by grabbing their A-cut in the 200 freestyle relay.  The squad of Isabela Tafur, Casey Owen, Vicki Galiamoutsa and Erica Smith touched second in 1:36.03 behind the GLIAC-record pace of the host GVSU team.  In a tightly-contested men's race, the UIndy team of Panagi, Greg Jarvis, Stiem and Oguz etched an NCAA A-cut (1:23.46), just over a second behind Ashland to take fourth place.

Ilhan took fifth in the 500 freestyle with a 4:37.96 time, earning a B-cut in the process.  Erica Smith clocked a 2:06.38 time in the 200 individual medley, good for fourth place and an NCAA A-cut.  Stiem smashed the GLIAC record on the men's side, easily outdistancing the competition in 1:49.95.  

Tafur took third in the 50 freestyle with her B-cut effort of 23.84.  Jarvis and Panagi each scored B-cuts in the 50 free as Jarvis (21.21) took sixth and Panagi (21.23) won the consolation (ninth).

Ozlem Taskin, Jaclyn Luscomb, Smith and Tafur teamed to finish the night with a third place showing in the 400 medley relay and earned the right to swin it at nationals with their 3:54.41 time.  The men did the same thing, placing third with a 3:22.67 time (Panagi, Stiem, Oguz and Sean Swibes).

FRIDAY
Taskin got the action started with a runner-up finish in the 400 individual medley.  She went 4:28.57 in the race to earn an A-cut.  Kelsey Kennedy won the consolation race for the Greyhounds.  Stiem recorded his second GLIAC record in as many days with his 3:58.43 time in his 400IM win.  That record, which was held by current UIndy Assistant Coach Orel Oral, had previously stood for seven years.  Austin Biefnes grabbed a B-cut and fourth place in the event (4:10.63).

Erica Smith made it two straight GLIAC records to UIndy swimmers with her win in the 100 butterfly.  She touched in 55.24 to wipe out the mark set last year by former Greyhound Valerie CrosbyAdam Petro and Seth Smoker each recorded B-cuts on the men's side, finishing 10th and 12th, respectively.

Tyler Kennedy took third in the men's 100 breaststroke, finishing with a B-cut time of 58.14.  Swibes was sixth in that event for UIndy.  Meghan Donahue won the consolation race in the 100 backstroke, picking up a B-cut time in the process (59.84).  Panagi touched sixth in the men's race, alos with a B-cut (51.72).

The women's 800 freestyle relay team (Taskin, Smith, Donahue, Tafur) earned its ticket to the national meet with a qualifying time of 7:35.96, good for second place.  The UIndy men were fifth in the final event of the night.

SATURDAY
Alacli finished fourth in the 1000 freestyle with a B-cut time of 9:28.61.  Cansu Akin and Taskin finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 backstroke, each recording B-cut times.

Tafur broke her own GLIAC record in the 100 freestyle, registering an A-cut 50.95 time, nearly a half-second better than last season.  Stiem was edged out on the men's side, but still took second and scored an A-cut as well (45.42).  Greg Jarvis was eighth in the race with a B-cut clocking (46.58). 

Tyler Kennedy picked-up fifth in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a B-cut time of 2:08.65. Erica Smith had an A-cut (2:03.20) and runner-up finish while Taskin was seventh with a B-cut (2:09.16) in the 200 butterfly.  Petro was seventh in the men's race with a 1:53.26 effort, good for a B-standard.

The women's 400 free relay team of Taskin, Smith, Owen and Tafur got their A-cut (3:31.52) and finished third.  The men's squad of Jarvis, Oguz, Panagi and Stiem did the same with their 3:04.07 mark.

The Greyhounds will next compete at the NCAA Division II Championships, set for Mar. 11-14 in Houston, Texas as part of the D-II Winter Sports Festival.
