Women take 15th consecutive Little State title

MARION, Ind.- The UIndy women's track and field squad won its 15th consecutive Little State team title during the weekend, and the men's team took second by just ten points at the annual meet held this year at Indiana Wesleyan. The Greyhound women earned the team crown with 157.50 points, 54 points more than its nearest competition.

In addition to taking the team title, the UIndy women also took both the women's athlete of the year awards, with Nichelle Curtis being named the Women's Track Athlete of the Year and Amy Schmitz taking the honor for the field athletes.

Curtis took top billing in the 100-meter dash, crossing in a time of 12.18. Her teammate, Shanese McGregor took second in the event with a time of 12.55. Curtis was also tops in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.08, while Kierra Allen took second with a time of 25.56 in the race. McGregor posted a fourth place finish in 25.87. Allen also finished runner-up in the 400-meter race with a time of 58.29. Shirah Bennett took second in the 100-meter hurdles for the Greyhounds, posting a time of 15.27 in the race. The 4x100 meter relay squad of Curtis, McGregor, Shannon Smith and Ashley DeVries also took a win for the women, coming in with a time of 48.25, while the 4x400 team of Allen, Curtis, McGregor and Christina Carrick took second in their race with a time of 4:01.30.

In the field events, Emily Shaf took a runner-up finish in the high jump, reaching a mark of 1.65 meters. Rachel Robertson took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.07 meters. Andrea Horban took the women's shot put competition with a toss of 14.06 meters, more than a full meter farther than the second-place mark. Courtney Kuzmicz improved her prior provisional mark in the discus and won the event with a throw of 41.85 meters, with Horban taking fourth with a throw of 40.84 meters. Schmitz took the hammer throw crown, with her throw of 54.75 almost a full two meters better than the second-place mark. Horban took third in the hammer (49.46m). Heather Rourke closed out the UIndy day with a second-place finish in the javelin throw, hitting a mark of 36.32 meters.

On the men's side, Frederick Helm crossed the line first in the 100-meter dash in 10.67. Nick Seagor took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89, while the team of Helm, Kyle Thompson, Carl Smith and Anthony Flournoy took first in the 4x100 relay with a time of 41.56.

The Greyhounds had a pair of pole vaulters finish second and third in their event, with Scott Knust taking second with a mark of 4.55 meters and Cory Fornal taking third with a mark of 4.40 meters. Grant Dean finished second in the long jump with a leap of 7.10 meters, and Benjamin Bertoli took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.04 meters. Sam Elmore and Craig Myers finished third and fourth in the discus throw, with tosses of 44.98 and 44.85 meters, respectively, while Myers, Willie Little and Elmore finished second through fourth in the hammer. Myers improved on his previous provisional mark with a throw of 57.43, while Little hit 54.54 and Elmore hit 52.54. Seth Galloway also improved upon his provisional mark, in the javelin, taking top honors with a throw of 59.85.

UIndy will head to a pair of meets this weekend, traveling to the EKU Open at Eastern Kentucky University Friday and the Dave Rankin Invite at Purdue University Saturday.
