Final Results

INDIANAPOLIS-  The OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon was not the only running event in downtown Indianapolis Saturday.  Under the shadow of the largest half-marathon in the nation, the 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships were competed for at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on the campus of IUPUI.  The UIndy women took the team title while their male counterparts settled for runners-up.

SATURDAY
While the Greyhound women had little trouble earning the program's third outdoor title and first since 2004, the UIndy men were edged by a single point by Missouri S&T.  Both Greyhound squads combined for eight individual titles and a relay championship on the second and final day, bringing the UIndy event championship total to 13.

The Indianapolis throwers picked up were they left off Friday by continuing to rack up points in the infield.  Sam Elmore and Courtney Kuzmicz made it a UIndy sweep in the discus with throws of 49.55m and 44.29m, respectively, as both etched NCAA provisional marks.

Andrea Horban made it six individual titles for the UIndy throwers with an NCAA automatic-qualifying shot put toss of 14.44m.  In all, Indianapolis received 153 of its 431.5 total points (men's and women's) from the eight throwing events.

Frederick Helm staked his claim to the title of “GLVC's Fastest Man” by winning the 100m dash in 10.61 seconds.  Helm was joined by Anthony Flournoy, Carl Smith and Alfred Woods on the GLVC champion 4x100m relay team that posted a time of 41.55 seconds.

The men's 4x400 relay team also came out victorious Saturday as Flournoy, Smith, Benjamin Bertoli, Nick Brattain edged the S&T squad by two tenths with a time of 3:17.13.

Rounding out UIndy's sprint champions was Nichelle Curtis.  After falling just short in the 100m dash, Curtis took the 200m title with a provisional mark of 24.69.

Katie Dewey, who is also the point guard on the UIndy women's basketball team, picked up 10 points for the Hounds after taking the women's 800m title with a time of 2:17.71.

Micheal Landy followed with an individual title in the 1500m, crossing in 3:58.40, while Porsche Jackson did it all with a heptathlon championship, a third-place showing in the 100m hurdles, and a fourth-place result in the 400m hurdles.

At the conclusion of the event, the league's head coaches voted on the following awards:

UIndy also dominated the men's hammer throw by taking six of the top seven spots and each of the top three.  Willie Little notched an automatic-qualifying 58.98m throw to take first.  He was followed by teammates Sam Elmore (55.36m) and Craig Myers (55.12m), both of whom recorded NCAA provisional marks.

With a 54.38m hammer throw, senior Amy Schmitz became the first of two female event winners for Indianapolis Friday.  UIndy junior Courtney Kuzmicz finished second in the event with a throw of 48.49m.

Senior Emily Schaf, who notched a runner-up finish in the triple jump earlier in the day, collected her third GLVC outdoor high jump title by clearing 1.66m.

Frederick Helm and Nichelle Curtis were two of many Hounds with success in preliminary races, as Helm recorded the best men's 100m time (10.52) and Curtis topped the women's prelims in both the 100m (12.10) and 200m (24.63).
