McBride wins national championship, Softball takes Super Regional
Women’s Golf:  Junior Lyndsay McBride (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) capped a wonderful performance at the NCAA D-II Women’s Golf Championship with a final-round 77 in windy, rainy conditions at Findlay Country Club Saturday to take the 2009 individual national championship. Senior Kristi Piepenbrink (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) joined her in the top five, as the pair garnered All-American honors and helped lead the Greyhounds to a third-place tie in the 12-team event, their best finish in program history.

Battling the elements, McBride (74-75-72-77) held off a talented 72-woman field by ending the final round Saturday with seven straight pars to grab medalist honors, while Piepenbrink earned sole possession of fifth place with a four-round score of 304 (77-74-76-77).

UIndy capped a record-setting 2008-09 season by posting team scores of 309-315-310-314 at the finals to tie with defending-champion Rollins College at 1248 strokes in 72 holes.  In addition, the Greyhounds also won their league-high fourth GLVC crown in April and placed third in the NCAA D-II East Regional a week later to qualify for last week’s championship.

Softball:
The UIndy softball team will make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Softball National Championships after orchestrating a doubleheader sweep of host Saginaw Valley State in the Super Regional round at the SVSU Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.  The Greyhounds posted wins of 5-2 and 12-3 to advance to the eight-team championships next week.

The Hounds dropped game one 2-1 Friday in the best-of-three match-up versus 13th-ranked Saginaw Valley.  Needing two wins Saturday to avoid elimination, UIndy came through with two clutch victories, including a 12-3 six-inning win in the clincher, to move on to its first-ever championship appearance.

UIndy is the lone non-ranked team to win its Super Regional as well as the only road team to come away with a regional title.  The champions of the nation’s eight regions will travel to Salem, Va. and the Moyer Sports Complex for the 2009 NCAA D-II National Championship Finals, May 21-25.  The Greyhounds face the South Central Regional champions, No. 4 Angelo State, in the opener Thursday at 12:00 p.m.  A win would put their next game at noon Friday, while a loss would mean they play Saturday at noon.

UIndy's progress at the championships can be followed here.

Men’s Golf:
The 12th-ranked UIndy men’s golf team starts its bid for a national title Tuesday at the 2009 NCAA D-II National Championship, scheduled for May 19-22.  The 72-hole event will be held in Blaine, Wash. at Loomis Trail Golf Club and will feature the top 20 teams in Division II.

UIndy’s appearance will be its second straight in the national finals, as the Greyhounds tied for eighth at last year’s championship.  Senior Justin Hueber (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Leo) comes into the tournament ranked fifth overall in the Golfstat Cup standings and first among D-II golfers.  The All-American carries a 70.47 scoring average this season and is a two-time medalist at the GLVC championships.

UIndy's progress at the championships can be followed here.

Track & Field: Eight track and field athletes will represent the University of Indianapolis at the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas.  The Greyhound throwers represent seven of the eight, three men and four women.

The UIndy women, who are ranked 18th in Division II according to the latest dual meet rankings by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), will send five athletes to the national meet.  Leading the way is fifth-year senior Amy Schmitz (Normal, Ill./Central Catholic), who owns D-II’s second-best hammer throw mark this season heading into the meet (57.07m).  She earned All-America accolades earlier this season in the weight throw at the D-II Indoor Championships.  Schmitz will be joined by Andrea Horban (Elkhart, Ind./Mishawaka) (shotput), Emily Schaf (Boggstown, Ind./Triton Central) (high jump), Heather Rourk (Iola, Kan./Iola) (javelin), and Courtney Kuzmucz (discus).

On the men's side, Seth Galloway (Center Grove, Ind./Center Grove) will look to earn All-America honors after a phenomenal campaign that saw him break and re-break the school record in the javelin (62.63m).  Galloway, just a sophomore, already has two GLVC titles to his credit in that event.  Senior Willie Little (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) and sophomore Craig Myers (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) will also make the trip, each as hammer throw competitors.

UIndy's progress at the championships can be followed here.

Baseball:
UIndy’s deep run in the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional ended Sunday with a pair of losses in the finals to 11th-ranked Grand Valley State.  The Lakers topped UIndy 5-4 and 4-3 to advance to the Division II College World Series, as the Greyhounds finished the season 43-21.

UIndy won three straight games to open the six-team, double-elimination tourney and advance to the finals undefeated.  UIndy downed second-seeded Grand Valley 5-4 in the Thursday’s opener before defeating three-seed Southern Indiana on back-to-back days, 7-3 and 9-2, respectively.

Indianapolis entered Sunday needing just one win versus GVSU to move on, but the Lakers slipped by the Hounds with two one-run victories, denying the Hounds of their first regional title since 2000.

Three Greyhounds made the all-tournament team in designated hitter Ben Sondgeroth (Rock Falls, Ill./Rock Falls), catcher Chase Kittinger (Carmi, Ill./Carmi White County) and pitcher Cory White (South Fulton, Tenn./South Fulton).  Sondgeroth hit two homers and drove in six runs in the event, Kittinger hit .353 with five RBI, and White garnered a win while striking out 17 hitters in 13 innings.
