INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Greyhound women's soccer team bounced back after their lone loss of the season to down Midwest regional power and Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Northern Kentucky 2-1 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium.
Both teams played scoreless for the first 32 minutes of the contest, until freshman forward
Shelby Spinelli beat the keeper on a breakaway goal off a pass from senior
Amanda Reese.
Spinelli's fourth goal of the year would be the only goal of the game's opening half as the Hounds took a 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the visiting Norse 9-5.
Indianapolis got an insurance goal in the 52nd minute from
Morgan Binder after she finished a cross inside six yards on a ball off the foot of
Jamie Huebner. It was Binder's first goal of the season and Huebner's second assist.
Northern Kentucky (5-2-0, 2-2-0 GLVC) would cut the Greyhound lead in half in the 58th minute on a tally by Danielle Hogue. Hogue finished a rebound that came off the crossbar on a shot by
Amanda Mason.
The Norse then mounted an offensive attack in the game's final 15 minutes that proved unsuccessful against sophomore goalkeeper
Shae Morris and the UIndy defense. Morris stopped four Northern Kentucky shots and held them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to preserve the win.
The victory improves the Greyhounds to 7-1-0 on the 2009 campaign and 4-1-0 in GLVC action. Indianapolis will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on fourth-ranked Grand Valley State at the Fort Wayne Sport Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Kick-off is slated for 5:00 PM.
