INDIANAPOLIS- In an announcement made by the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tuesday, UIndy student-athletes
Jessica Canary (women's basketball),
Seth Fair (men's golf) and
Lyndsay McBride (women's golf) were each named their respective sport's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Coupled with volleyball player
Kyleigh Turner, UIndy boasts four scholar-athletes among the GLVC's 15 2009-10 award winners, most in the league.
The league selects one student-athlete in each conference sport to be designated the GLVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. This award is based upon athletic accomplishments, both team and individual, and academic performance in the season upon which the award is based. Each conference member has the opportunity to nominate one individual from its team for the award. Nominees must have a cumulative grade point average which meets Academic All-American standards (3.30), and freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award. The voting is completed by each institution's Faculty Athletic Representative.
Jessica Canary led the UIndy women's basketball team to the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division title and a third consecutive NCAA berth in 2009-10. The Hounds compiled a stellar 26-4 record this season and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the
USA TODAY ESPN D-II Coaches' Poll.
Canary, owner of a 3.92 GPA in elementary education, finished her basketball career as the only player in program history to amass more than 1400 points, 600 rebounds and 400 assists. The All-American Honorable Mention honoree helped the Greyhounds to an 88-32 (.727) mark in her time on campus, one win shy of the program record for most victories in a four-year span.
With of a 3.67 GPA in accounting,
Seth Fair capped his collegiate golf career with a course-record-tying 68 in a fourth-place performance at the NCAA D-II Championship last month, his third straight appearance in the event.
A finalist for the Byron Nelson Award, Fair was also named the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Player of the Year by the league's coaches, All-Midwest Region by the GCAA, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSDIA).
Lyndsay McBride completed a stellar golf career at UIndy by winning three tournaments her senior year on the way to setting the program record for lowest single-season scoring average (76.0). She led the Greyhounds to a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship, placing 18th among a field of 72 competitors.
McBride, a double major who graduated with a 3.84 GPA in Visual Communication & Design and Fine Arts, garnered All-American Second Team accolades from the National Golf Coaches Association. In addition to her second straight GLVC Women's Golf Scholar Athlete of Year nod, she was also named the 2010 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, one season removed from winning the NCAA D-II individual national championship.
Indianapolis has topped the GLVC in Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners seven of the past 10 years, including each of the last three. UIndy student-athletes have captured the honor 13 times since the fall of 2007, and 42 times since the award's inception in 1998. For a complete list of winners,
