INDIANAPOLIS- Former UIndy baseball standout
Adam Akin, a senior on last spring's NCAA tournament squad, was announced as the 2010 NCAA Division II statistical champion for sacrifice hits per game Wednesday. Akin led all D-II players in both total sac hits (20) and sac hits per contest (0.37).
Akin's team mindset, along with Head Coach
Gary Vaught's propensity to bunt, helped the Greyhounds place second in Division-II in sac hits last season, behind only South Central Regional champion Central Missouri. Greyhound teammates
Aryn Ross and
Adam Rusche also ranked highly in the category, as each tied for 17th in the nation with 11 sac bunts.
Akin, who ranked in the top 10 in the nation in sacrifice hits each of his three seasons at UIndy, finished his time on campus with 56 career sac bunts. Former Greyhound and Coach-Vaught pupil Dennis Nisbet (1999-2002) is the all-time Division II leader with 70 sac hits.
In addition to ranking second in D-II in sacrifices, UIndy placed sixth in the nation in times hit by pitch, 23rd in runs scored and 28th in batters struck out per nine innings. The Hounds compiled a 35-22 record on the way to making their second straight NCAA Midwest Regional appearance.
