INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhound wrestling team stands in 14th place after day one of the 33rd annual Midwest Classic at Nicoson Hall.
UIndy amassed a total of 36 team points on Day one of the event. Top-ranked Newberry, last year's team champion, currently holds the team lead with a team score of 87.5.
The Greyhounds were led on day one by
Josh Kieffer at 125. Kieffer (10-3) went 3-0 on the day with a pin, and an 8-3 win over top-ranked Connor McDonald in the quarterfinal round of the bracket. Kieffer is the lone UIndy grappler still in championship bracket contention.
Still alive in consolation bracket action are both
Jeff Weiss (165) and
Evan Wooding (285).
Weiss went 3-1 on the day en route to making it to day two. Weiss (13-7) took wins via major decision in his first two matches of the day, and then defeated Upper Iowa's Blake Sorensen 9-7 in the fourth round of the consolation bracket to advance on.
Wooding also went 3-1 on day one. The Greyhound heavyweight won by major decision in his first action of the day, and took his third win to advance to day two 2-1 over Blake Lucas of Ohio Valley.
Justin Kieffer (6-4) bowed out of the tournament in an overtime match with with Wayne Black of Mt. St. Joseph, falling 4-2 in extra time. Prior to the loss, Justin went 2-1 on the day, winning his first two matches of the day, one via a pin.
