INDIANAPOLIS- A trio of Greyhound wrestlers placed at the 33rd annual Midwest Classic at Nicoson Hall Monday. As a team, UIndy took 16th in the 25-team field.
Josk Kieffer was the highest finisher for UIndy, taking third place in the 125 weight class. Kieffer (12-4) won via a 9-0 major decision in the consolation semifinals over Tommy Poynter of Wabash, and took the third place bout 6-4 over Anthony Bruno of Northern State.
Evan Wooding took seventh for the Greyhounds, in the heavyweight bracket. Wooding (12-7), fell in his first match of the day to Ross Janney of McKendree 5-0, and then won via a medical forfeit by Derek Nickel of Lindsey Wilson in the seventh/eighth place match.
Jeff Weiss took eighth place in the 165 weight class, going 0-2 on day two of the tournament. Weiss (13-9) fell to Mason True of Findlay 2-1 in the seventh/eighth place bout.
Newberry repeated as Midwest Classic champion, amassing 117 team points. Upper Iowa narrowly took second, scoring 115.5 team points. Findlay took third place with 84.5 points.
This year's Mike Horton Most Outstanding Wrestler was Kyle Reid of McKendree, the champion of the 184-pound bracket. Elias Larson of Trine, the 157 pound champion, had the most falls on the tournament.
The Greyhounds take a break for the holiday and New Year's, and will return to the mat Jan. 15 at Ashland's Mid-Atlantic duals.
