Men's Basketball: Mikel Brigham tipped in a missed shot with 1:10 remaining in overtime and University of Indianapolis men's basketball hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 29 seconds to defeat No. 1 Bellarmine, 99-94, in overtime in front of 1,632 at Nicoson Hall on Thursday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams. Brigham also hit 1-of-2 free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, 84-84, after Chris Dowe's three-pointer at the buzzer spun around the rim and fell off. Brigham was one of two Greyhounds with double-doubles as he had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Wilbur O'Neal tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds in UIndy's first victory over the nation's top team since Jan. 8, 2004, over Southern Indiana. Adrian Moss added 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists to help UIndy defeat the defending national champions and Reece Cheatham added 24 points, all in the second half and overtime, three asissts and two rebounds. Louisville native Miles Mitchell scored 10 points, all in the second half and overtime, against his hometown school. The Knights were led by its Preseason All-America back court of Kendle with 31 points and Hobbs with 14 points, 12 assists and four steals. UIndy shot 56.9 percent overall (33-58), including 22-of-31 (.710) in the second half and overtime. After making only 1-of-11 three-pointers in the first half, UIndy connected on 8-of-13 the rest of the game. Bellarmine also shot well by making 53.4 percent (31-of-58). UIndy made 24-of-31 free throws, while the Knights connected on 22-of-28.
Bellarmine forced 17 UIndy turnovers, while only committing eight to have a 19-11 edge in points off turnovers, but UIndy dominated on the glass. The Greyhounds had a 38-19 rebounding advantage, including 12-4 on the offensive glass to lead to a 19-4 lead in second-chance points. Northern Kentucky connected on 10 three-pointers to defeat UIndy men's basketball, 80-63, in front of 1,707 at Nicoson Hall on Saturday night. The Norse made 10-of-24 three-pointers and 24-of-30 free throws, while the Greyhounds missed their first 10 free throws to finish 2-of-14 and made 5-of-13 three-pointers. Northern Kentucky also out-rebounded the Greyhounds, 40-33, to double them up in second-chance points, 18-9. The Greyhounds tried to counter by dominating in the paint, 44-16, but the three-point and free throw discrepancy was too much. Adrian Moss led UIndy with 17 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two blocks, while Wilbur O'Neal added 16 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jarrett Hamilton joined them in double figures with 13 points points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Northern Kentucky had four players with more than 10, led by Tony Rack hitting five three-pointers on the way to 19 points. Jon Van Hoose added 15, followed by Ernest Watson with 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks and Ethan Faulkner with 12 points and eight assists. NKU made 7-of-14 three-pointers and 4-of-6 free throws in the first half, while the Greyhounds missed all eight free throws and made 3-of-6 three-pointers. The Greyhounds are off until Dec. 16-17 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Holiday Hoops Classic against Wilmington (Del.) and St. Mary's (Texas). The next home game for UIndy won't be until the New Year against Maryville at 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 12.

Women's Basketball: Junior Nickole Gonser scored 15 points to lead three Greyhounds in double figures in a 71-59 win against visiting Bellarmine Thursday night at Nicoson Hall. The Greyhounds have won each of their last four contests, all against in-region opponents. In all, UIndy forced a season-high 23 turnovers on the night, as the hustling Hounds seemed to come up with every loose ball. Four Greyhounds had at least two steals, with Gonser accounting for five. Junior Kristin Turner, who came into the night leading the GLVC in assists, dropped six dimes to go with 13 points and three steals. Gardner finished with 12 points - all on threes. The UIndy women's basketball team (5-2, 2-0 GLVC) upped its winning streak to five with a 55-44 win versus visiting Northern Kentucky (4-2, 1-1) Saturday evening. Junior Sydney Weinert excelled on both ends of the court by amassing nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. As per usual in a match-up versus NKU, the game was a low-scoring affair. Neither team has scored more than 64 points in seven of the last eight meetings. Even so, the Hounds held their opponents to just 44 points, marking the lowest total scored by an in-conference adversary since Kentucky Wesleyan mustered 42 points in February of 2010. Nickole Gonser led all players with a career-best 15 points, while also adding eight boards and two steals. Turner scored nine of her 14 points in the second half and freshman Kelly Walter scored eight points off the bench. Coming off a school-record 37-point performance Thursday, the Hounds held NKU senior Casse Mogan to 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting. UIndy hosts the last of six straight home games when Cedarville comes to Nicoson Hall Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern.
