Men's fall schedule
Women's fall schedule
INDIANAPOLIS- The Greyhound men's and women's golf teams announced their respective fall schedules Wednesday. Both squads will make a trek to Florida in October, with the men also adding a trip to California.
Coach
Brent Nicoson, who heads both Greyhound squads, thinks this fall could be quite challenging, especially for his men's team.
"This is by far the toughest schedule we've had in any of my seasons so far,” he explains of the men's slate. “We decided to travel to play as tough as schedule as possible so we would be prepared for postseason play. We achieved that by playing some very, very tough tournaments. The tournament in Monterey will be a better field than the national championship."
Nicoson is referring to the Otter Invitational in Seaside, Calif., an event that will be hosted by defending-national-champion Cal State-Monterey Bay.
The Hounds lost team-staple
Blair Webb to graduation, but return the other four members of last year's top five. The group is led by senior
Aaron Monson, who received All-America Honorable Mention from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) last season.
Though he enters his sixth season as the Greyhound men's head coach, Nicoson begins his first as the women's mentor. Last season's top-four players return to the fold in 2011-12, including all-conference senior
Darin Pinnick.
Like the UIndy men, the ladies have five fall events, starting with the IU Fall Kickoff Sep. 10-11. Three of the next four tournaments will feature a wealth of in-region competition, but the fall highlight may come during the team's trip to Florida in October.
"We wanted to start playing a few out-of-region events to strengthen our schedule a bit,” says Nicoson. "Traveling to the Nova Southeastern tournament in Palm Beach Gardens allows us to see some of the best Division II teams in the nation, and that will help us tremendously later in the year. It will tell us that we belong, or tell us how hard we need to work."
Both teams have an impressive streak of NCAA appearances on the line, with the men earning seven consecutive NCAA berths and the women qualifying for five straight national tournaments.
