JENISON, Mich. --
The University of Indianapolis men's and women's swimming and diving teams improved on their 2011 finish by both taking third at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships at the Jenison Aquatics Center.

"Moving up one spot at the GLIAC Championships is a big step for both programs," head coach Gary Kinkead said.

The nationally-ranked No. 14 women finished in third place with 481.5 points behind No. 5 Wayne State (923) and No. 4 Grand Valley State (599.5), while the No. 7 men totaled 540.5 points behind No. 9 Wayne State (872) and No. 5 Grand Valley State (801).

Junior Maura Donahue repeated as GLIAC Swimmer of the Year after winning the 100 free, 200 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

Overall, the men earned 29 NCAA "B" qualifying times and two automatic bids, while the women also had two automatic bids and 24 "B" times.

Freshman Dalton Herendeen got the final day off to a rousing start by finishing eighth in the 1,650 free in a time of 16:32.78 to take sixth all-time on the UIndy career list.

Meghan Donahue took sixth in the 200 back in a NCAA "B" qualifying time of 2:07.19. For the men, Austin Biefnes won the consolation race in a personal best "B" time of 1:51.27, while freshman Justin Rossillo finished fourth by breaking his school record (also broke the pool record) with a time of 1:48.82.

Maura Donahue gave the raucous crowd even more excitement as she trailed after the final turn, but out-kicked Ashland's Julie Widmann to win the 100 free in a "B" time of 50.70, while Julia Madeira was third and Hayley Good sixth in "B" times of 51.29 and 52.30. Senior Vicki Galiamoutsa also earned a "B" time in a personal best of 52.27 to win the consolation race.

Bruno Barbosa finished second in the 100 free in a "B" time personal best of 44.90, while Nikolas Aresti took eighth in a "B" time of 46.57. Aaron Stevenson and Justin Klopp also earned "B" times in 46.42 and 46.65 in the consolation race.

Jaclyn Luscomb moved into second all-time in the 200 breast by finishing fourth in a "B" time of 2:22.05, while Aviv Sela and Muzaffer Demirtas went fourth and fifth in the men's event. Both men achieved season-best "B" times as Sela passed Demirtas to move into third all-time in 2:03.02, while Demirtas swam his fastest time of the season in 2:03.91.

Freshman Samantha Asencio moved into fourth all-time at UIndy by winning the 200 fly consolation in a "B" time of 2:09.27, while Ashlee Fishburn moved into fifth all-time finishing fifth in the event in 2:09.31.

The men's 200 fly  was another one of the most exciting in the meet so far, as senior Guy Kogel broke his school record with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 1:46.80, but was edged at the wall by Grand Valley State's Aaron Beebe in 1:46.44. Junior Daniel Chan also broke Kogel's previous school record to finish third in a "B" time of 1:48.49.

On the three-meter diving board, freshmen Tyler Offutt and Avery Schmidt finished fifth and eighth with 385 points and 292 points, respectively.

The women closed out the meet by winning the final event with an automatic qualifying time of 3:25.55 in the 400 free relay with Madeira, Maura Donahue, Good and Meghan Donahue on the anchor. The men concluded the event with a school record of 3:02.46 on the way to a "B" time and third-place finish with Barbosa, Klopp, Stevenson and Aresti.

DAY THREE UPDATE

Maura Donahue earned another win for UIndy with a "B" cut of 1:50.68 in the 200 free, while Julia Madeira was third in a "B" cut personal best of 1:53.18 and Hayley Good was seventh in a "B" cut of 1:58.12.

Daniel Chan also excited the crowd as he set a GLIAC meet and Jenison Aquatics Center pool record in the prelims of the 400 IM in 3:57.41. He then bettered that time with an "A" cut of 3:56.25 in the finals finishing second behind Wayne State in 3:55.78. Austin Biefnes also set a "B" cut of 4:04.60 by winning the consolation race.

In the 100 fly, Ashlee Fishburn was fifth in a "B" of 57.64, while freshman Samantha Asencio was sixth in a personal best "B" of 57.72. For the men in the 100 fly, Guy Kogel was second in a "B" of 48.45, a personal best for the second-fastest 100 butterflyer in school history.

Aaron Stevenson earned a "B" of 1:43.57 as runner-up of the 200 free consolation.

Jaclyn Luscomb tied for fourth in the 100 breast in a "B" of 1:04.94, while Muzaffer Demirtas was fifth in a "B" of 56.38 and Aviv Sela was eighth in a "B" of 57.55 for the men in the event.

Bruno Barbosa and Justin Rossillo finished second and third in the 100 back in "B" cuts of 49.55 and 49.83, while Meghan Donahue set a "B" cut of 57.38 to finish fifth for the women.

Friday night closed with the 800 free relay with the women (Madeira, Good, Shiran Abrahamson, Ma. Donahue) finishing second in 7:31.92, which was just sort of an "A" cut and eclipsed the previous pool record. Barbosa, Justin Klopp, Chan and Rossillo took third for the men in a "B" of 6:46.13.

DAY TWO UPDATE

UIndy started out hot in Thursday night's first final as the women's 200 free relay just missed setting a new pool record by winning the event in a NCAA automatic qualifying time and school record of 1:33.37 with Julia Madeira, Maura Donahue, Vicki Galiamoutsa and Meghan Donahue.

The men then finished fourth in the event in 1:23.52 with Bruno Barbosa, Justin Klopp, Nikolas Aresti and Aaron Stevenson in the pool for the Greyhounds.

The women finished first and second in the 500 free consolation finals with Shiran Abrahamson in 5:06.52 and Hayley Good in a personal-best of 5:09.28 to move into eighth on the UIndy all-time list. Both were also NCAA "B" cuts.

In the men's 500, Adil Assouab moved into fifth in UIndy history with a time of 4:39.40 to finish third in the consolation with a NCAA "B" cut. The men racked up more points in the 200 IM with four swimmers scoring. Austin Biefnes, Aviv Sela and Justin Lyle were second, fifth and seventh in the consolation, while Daniel Chan took seventh in the championship in 1:52.93 heat. Biefnes and Chan both had "B" cuts.

The men had 6-of-16 competitors in the 50 free with Aaron Stevenson and Justin Klopp finishing sixth and seventh in the championship race in "B" cuts of 21.05 and 21.10. Bruno Barbosa won the consolation race in 20.93, followed by Nikolas Aresti in fourth, Justin Rossillo in fifth and Guy Kogel in seventh.

Madeira moved into third all-time at UIndy with a "B" cut of 23.63 on her way to third in the 50 free, while Galiamoutsa was fifth in a "B" of 23.80. Julia Walters was fourth in the consolation to add more points.

The second night of competion closed with the 400 medley relay, where the women placed third with Meghan Donahue, Jaclyn Luscomb, Ashlee Fishburn and Maura Donahue, while the men were disqualified.

In diving action, Tyler Offutt placed fifth with 396.40 points and Avery Schmidt was eighth with 331.20 points on the one-meter board.

DAY ONE UPDATE

In the 1,000 free, Maura Donahue was third in a season-best 10:16.53 for a NCAA "B" cut qualifying time, while Shiran Abrahamson was ninth in a "B" cut of 10:34.76, which moves her into fourth on the UIndy all-time list.

In the men's 1,000 free, Adil Assouab was seventh in a "B" cut of 9:41.48, which is a "B" cut and moves him into fourth on the UIndy all-time list. Dalton Herendeen was 13th and Zach Laffin was 16th to add more points in the event for the Greyhounds.

In the women's 200 medley relay, Meghan Donahue, Jaclyn Luscomb, Samantha Asencio and Julia Madeira finished fourth in a NCAA "B" cut and school record of 1:44.88, while the men were second in a "B" cut school record of 1:30.12 with Justin Rossillo, Muzaffer Demirtas, Guy Kogel and Nikolas Aresti. The Greyhounds were just .07 behind first place Grand Valley in the event.

The Greyhounds will now wait to find out how many competitors will make the cut for the 2012 NCAA Championships in Mansfield, Texas, from March 14-18.
