Greyhounds win GLVC All-Sports Trophy

All-Time UIndy Athletic Department Success

Final 2011-12 GLVC All-Sports Standings

INDIANAPOLIS -
The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced today that the University of Indianapolis is the 2011-12 winner of the GLVC All-Sports Trophy.

The Greyhounds totaled 167.5 points in the GLVC's 17 championship sports behind a UIndy-record seven GLVC championships. UIndy out-scored second-place Northern Kentucky by 11.5 points and third-place Bellarmine by 26.5 points.

"I'm incredibly proud of our student-athletes and coaches for their success this season and excited that the GLVC All-Sports Trophy will be back at UIndy," Director of Athletics Dr. Sue Willey said. "It's a credit to their athletic dedication, in addition to the hard work they put into their academics, that makes UIndy a model NCAA Division II institution."

GLVC all-sport
This is the fourth GLVC All-Sports Trophy for UIndy and the first since the 2002-03 season. The Greyhounds won the first conference all-sports award in 1978-79 and again in 1994-95.

The championships successes for UIndy started in the fall with the volleyball team taking its third conference championship with a thrilling five-set win in Ruth Lilly Center in the tournament championship match.

The second championship came in the winter with the men's indoor track and field team winning its third consecutive conference title in the event hosted by Wisconsin-Parkside.

The big points for UIndy started to come in the spring as the Greyhounds finished the conference season by sweeping the last five championships to be contested.

The run started with a doubleheader on April 29 as the softball team defeated Illinois Springfield in the finals in Peoria, Ill., while women's golf completed a seven-shot comeback to win the championship in Waterloo, Ill.

For the third year in a row, the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams were double champions at the GLVC Championships at St. Joseph's College on May 5.

The final points for UIndy came at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind., as the baseball team bounced back from losing its tournament opener to win five in a row and knock off Northern Kentucky in the finals on May 13.

"This trophy is truly an award for the entire athletic department because it really is a team effort between coaches and student-athletes with the support and skills of everyone in the administration, in addition to the invaluable service of our athletic training and strength and conditioning personnel," Willey said.

The Greyhounds still have multiple teams alive in NCAA Championship competition as they strive for an all-time high finish in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. UIndy was seventh in NCAA Division II after the conclusion of the winter championships, two shy of its all-time high of fifth during the 2008-09 season.
