Women's tennis heads to DePauw to start season

Junior Taylor Eckert went 15-3 in dual singles last season.
INDIANAPOLIS – It's a new era for the University of Indianapolis women's tennis program with first-year head coach Malik Tabet in charge and it begins early with the Greyhounds headed to Greencastle, Ind., on Saturday and Sunday for the DePauw Fall Invitational.

Besides UIndy and the host Tigers, the tournament includes Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Bellarmine, Midwest Region foe Ohio Dominican, Hanover, IU Southeast and Transylvania.

Action begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with two rounds of singles followed by doubles and continues on into Sunday.

"I'm excited for the season to start and looking forward to seeing these ladies compete," Tabet said. "I have a lot to learn about their strengths and weaknesses. This will be an important opportunity for me to evaluate them and begin to build a game plan for each player to approach the rest of the fall schedule."

The Greyhounds return six players who have earned letters during their career, led by junior Taylor Eckert. She led the Crimson and Grey last season with a 15-3 dual match singles record (20-8 overall), including a 10-match winning streak to end the season, while also going 7-5 in doubles. Also back for UIndy are seniors Rachel Barger, Alex Covington and Kim Wasielewski, juniors Kasey Land and Claire Liles and sophomore Brooke Boyts.

UIndy will also see a pair of Indiana all-state freshmen debut in Allie Smith from Columbus East and Macey Speer from Roncalli.
