GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis women's tennis team compiled a 12-6 record in singles and 7-2 mark in doubles over the course of the weekend at the DePauw Fall Invitational. The Greyhounds claimed the No. 3 doubles championship with senior
Alex Covington and freshman
Macey Speer, while reaching the championship in four other flights.
Covington and Speer took down Anita Girizd and Carla Leggett of fellow NCAA D-II Midwest Region foe Ohio Dominican on Sunday.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Brooke Boyts and junior
Claire Liles dropped their final to Meg Crowley and Claire Marshall of DePauw 8-4.
In singles competition, freshman
Allie Smith competed in her third superbreaker in the final at No. 1, but couldn't get past Samanta Zambrano of Ohio Dominican 6-1, 3-6, (10-4).
"I changed up my strategy in the second set by hitting higher deep balls which kept my opponent back and not on the attack," Smith said about her championship match against Zambrano. "In the final tiebreaker, my opponent played well by being both patient and aggressive."
Junior
Claire Liles dropped her final at No. 4 singles 6-3, 7-6 (5) to Elizabeth Young of DePauw, while senior
Kim Wasielewski fell to Krista Derry of ODU 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
"Even though the level of competition was tougher and we didn't do as well as we hoped on the second day of the tournament, we as a team learned a lot about our games," Liles said. "We look forward to working hard and are excited about the rest of our season."
Besides the trio of second-place finishes, UIndy also finished third at No. 3 singles with junior
Taylor Eckert beating Aline Mariano of Ohio Dominican and senior
Rachel Barger at No. 5 over Anne Connelly of DePauw. Eckert also teamed with Smith to take another third at No. 2 doubles against the duo from IU Southeast.
On Saturday's first day of competition, the Greyhounds advanced to the finals in three flights of singles and two flights of doubles.
"With only a couple of days of practice, I only gave them a few things and they responded very well," head coach
Malik Tabet said. "I really liked that they are able to apply and execute the things I ask of them very quickly."
In singles, freshman

Kim Wasielewski reached the finals at No. 6.
Smith opened with a victory over Caitlin Hanely of Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Bellarmine 6-3, 3-6, (10-6) and then was able to prevail in another superbreaker over Claire Marshall of DePauw 6-2, 6-7 (5), (10-7). She will see a Midwest Region foe, Samanta Zambrano of Ohio Dominican, in the final.
Liles won 6-0, 6-1 in her opener against Maddie Ikerd of IU Southeast and then 6-1, 6-3 over Hannah Meyer of the hosts. She will see another Tiger, Elizabeth Young, in the final. Wasielewski's run to the final started with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Allison Poston of Hanover and then won 6-2, 6-3 versus Sophie Hoffman of DePauw. Her final will be against Ohio Dominicans' Krista Derry.
"Our whole team played very well
today. We had a strategy to focus on and had great instruction to help us execute," Wasielewski said. "We all now have a clear focus on the court even after only two days of practice. It was a great start to the season."
The Greyhounds are also in the finals at No. 1 doubles with sophomore
Brooke Boyts and Liles after an 8-5 win against Bellarmine and shutting out DePauw. Senior
Alex Covington and freshman
Macey Speer advanced to the three doubles championship with a pair of 8-0 wins against Transylvania and DePauw.
On Sept. 15-16, the Greyhounds will continue their fall schedule by heading back to DePauw for the Tiger Invitational against the hosts, Butler and IUPUI.
