EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior
Kristin Turner scored her 1,000th career point as a Greyhound Saturday afternoon, but the fifth-ranked UIndy women's basketball team (11-3, 4-2 GLVC) dropped its second straight game, 70-69, at Southern Indiana.
Turner – who finished with a game-high 25 points – needed just 13 tallies to reach the coveted 1,000-point milestone, a total she reached on a lay-up early in the second half. The Seymour, Ind., native is 19th Greyhound woman to reach quadruple digits and just the seventh Hound to reach the mark in three seasons or less*.
Saturday's combatants came into the day as two of the four teams tied atop the GLVC East standings., but along with UIndy, Lewis also stumbled this afternoon, leaving only USI and Kentucky Wesleyan as the only East Division teams at 5-1 in conference play.
In a frantic back-and-forth down the stretch, both teams put together momentum-shifting runs late in the game. After trailing much of the second half, the Hounds ran off 12 unanswered points to go up 61-55 with four minutes and 20 seconds to play. The run featured eight points from Turner, including six on back-to-back 3-pointers.
The Screaming Eagles (13-1, 5-1) responded with an 11-3 flurry to go up 66-64, only to fall back down by three points after a
Katy McIntosh jumper at the 1:50 mark.
McIntosh's bucket would represent the Hounds' final points of the day, however, as USI sophomore Anna Hackert delivered a big offensive rebound and a put-back in the final minute to put the Eagles up for good.
UIndy had a good look in the game's final possession, but Hackert came up with a block to seal the Greyhounds' first two-game skid of the year.
The Greyhounds came out of the gate running by scoring the game's first nine points. The UIndy defense yielded just one field goal in the opening six minutes, with a couple of early steals leading directly to transition buckets for the visitors.
The Screaming Eagles managed their first lead of the game at 26-25 and later lead by four, but the Hounds went on to earn a slim 34-33 edge by the end of the half.
Like the Hounds in the first half, USI held the advantage for the majority of the second. Midway through the final period, Minix's fifth triple of the day made it 55-49 Eagles, good for the home team's largest lead. Four lead changes followed until the score finally settled at 70-69 USI.
Turner had five assists to go with her season-high point total. McIntosh amassed 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while
Kirsten Gliesmann went for nine points and 10 boards.
Hackert finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds for USI.
UIndy plays the last of its three straight road games Monday, Jan. 21 when the Hounds travel to Saint Joseph's. With the men's game scheduled first, tip time from Rensselaer, Ind., is set for approximately 8:30 p.m. Eastern.
* Turner spent her freshman season at Oakland University, scoring 66 points for the Division I Golden Grizzlies. She finished play Saturday with 1,012 points as a Greyhound, part of 1,078 total points as a collegian.
