INDIANAPOLIS- Prior to the Greyhound track and field teams competing in the Tom Hathaway Challenge Feb. 2, they will host a reception to honor former UIndy great Tom Hathaway.
The event will center around a fun mile run in the Athletics and Recreation Center at 2:45 p.m. Prior to the beginning of the mile, there will be opening remarks and a prayer in memory of Coach Hathaway. Following the mile run, there will be light refreshments and chances to share memories of the late Greyhound coach.
Hathaway, a 2006 inductee to the UIndy Athletics Hall of Fame, was a UIndy letterwinner in cross country and track and field from 1951-54, including helping the Greyhounds to Hoosier College Conference cross country championships in 1952 and 1953. He then came back to coach the Greyhounds and was named Great Lakes Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 1992.
Also a successful high school coach, Hathaway was named Indiana High School Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1982, while leading Southport High School to four straight IHSAA titles.
In addition to his UIndy Hall of Fame honors, Hathaway was inducted into the Southport High School Hall of Fame in 1990, and the Indiana Track and Cross Country Hall of Fame in 1992. He also was a recipient of the prestigious "Sagamore of the Wabash" for influential Hoosiers in 1986 and "Tom Hathaway Day" by Indianapolis Mayor William Hudnut on April 18, 1986.
