LOUISVILLE – The UIndy men's tennis team took an early lead after doubles and held off Midwest Region No. 10 Bellarmine, 6-3, at the Eddie Weber Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Greyhounds (5-2, 2-1 GLVC) moved back over .500 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Knights (13-7, 1-3 GLVC) fell to two matches under even.
Head coach
Malik Tabet went back to the team of
Caleb Fellers and
Luke Hubert at No. 2 doubles and they improved to 3-0 as a team with an 8-4 win, while
Alex Poe and
Preston Swain won their third match in their last four outings with an 8-6 win at No. 3 for UIndy to take the lead, 2-1, into singles.
The Knights won at No. 2 singles in straight sets, but the Greyhounds earned a pair of straight set wins of their own to increase their lead.
Trevor Cox won 6-4, 6-1 over Carolos Antonioli at No. 4, while Poe took a 7-5, 6-4 win against Jimmy Fernandez at No. 5.
The Knights had an opportunity to rally, but Hubert shut down a comeback by Jacob Knagenhjelm at No. 3 to clinch the match with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win.
UIndy rounded out the scoring as Fellers took a super tiebreaker over Logan Knott at No. 6 7-5, 2-6, (10-3).
The Greyhounds remain on the road by traveling to Lebanon, Ill., on Sunday for a meeting with McKendree (11-2, 2-1 GLVC) at 1 p.m. ET.
