BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The UIndy men's tennis team took the early lead at McKendree on Sunday, but couldn't hang on in singles to fall to the Bearcats, 5-4, at the Kings Point Sports Club.
The Greyhounds (5-3, 2-2 GLVC) earned the early lead, 2-1, with a solid performance in doubles against McKendree (12-2, 3-1 GLVC), which is not eligible for the postseason this year as they continue the transition process to NCAA Division II.
Alex Poe and
Preston Swain improved to 7-3 as a team this season by defeating Luciano Misitrano and Fabio Tsuchiya 8-4 at No. 3 doubles, while
Fausto Cordova and
Ryan Frankel won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles.
The Bearcats recoved in singles to win each of the top four singles matches with straight set wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. Cordova won the first set at No. 2 singles against Moritz Kandt, but then had to retire trailing 4-2 in the third set for the winning point for McKendree.
The Greyhounds closed out the scoring with a pair of super tiebreaker wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Poe defeat Tsuchiya 6-4, 5-7, (10-8), while
Caleb Fellers downed Feylin Janssen 6-2, 4-6, (10-6).
UIndy closes out the regular season against nationally-ranked No. 40 Southern Indiana (12-4, 4-0 GLVC) at home on April at 10 a.m.
