Soccer, Cross Country enter league championship season
The league championship season is just around the corner as cross country and soccer both prepare for upcoming GLVC Championships. The cross country teams head to Edwardsville, Ill. for Saturday's GLVC meet while the soccer teams are in action on Sunday in the opening round of the GLVC soccer tournament.
Men's Soccer: Junior Jon Walker was named to the All-GLVC Second Team, announced today. The Greyhounds are ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region, according to the first release of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings. The expanded NCAA tournament will include 32 teams, four from each region. UIndy will play Oakland City on Wednesday to close out the regular season, then will travel to Northern Kentucky on Sunday for the opening round of the GLVC tournament.
Women's Soccer: The Greyhounds secured a home playoff game with a pair of wins last weekend. UIndy earned the No. 4 seed, meaning it will host its opening round match in the GLVC tournament. Fifth-seeded Northern Kentucky will be the opponent, a team that UIndy beat for the first time in school history back on Sep. 1 at NKU. Senior Sarah Jones was recently named the league's Women's Soccer Player of the Week after she scored both game-winners last week to help the Hounds finish 9-4 in league play. Jones and Ashley Seehase shared the team lead with 9 goals on the season.
Cross Country: The Greyhound cross country teams will compete in the GLVC Championships on Saturday after a two-week layoff. The UIndy men and women each finished fourth last season.
Volleyball: Head Coach Jody Butera led her team to its eighth straight 20-win season after a five-game win over Saint Joseph's on Tuesday. Senior Lynne Ross became the all-time total blocks leader at the school, surpassing the old mark held by Jennifer Suba (531). The team briefly steps outside of conference play this week, heading undefeated and #4-ranked Hillsdale on Thursday before hosting West Virginia State on Saturday.
Football: The Greyhounds will face back-to-back road games against two of the top teams in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference. Saturday’s tilt at Wayne State opens the tour followed by a trip to Saginaw Valley State on Oct. 28. A number of Greyhounds appear amongst the leaders in the NCAA Division II statistics, with junior Kenneth Akridge leading the list. Akridge is fourth in passes defended (14) and junior QB Casey Gillin is fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (166.3). Junior receiver Kevin Sanford moved into the UIndy top 10 list for receiving yards with 1,667 yards. He needs just 11 yards to slip past former Greyhound great Rob Mager and into ninth place.
Women's Golf: The University of Indianapolis recorded a team score of 680, good for a 13th-place finish in the Nova Southeastern Fall Invitational on Tuesday. The Greyhounds concluded their fall schedule at the PGA National Resort & Spa on the challenging par-72, 6,000-yard Squire Course against some of the best teams in all of Division II. Freshman Sarah Prascsak paced the Hounds with a two-round score of 158. The event was the final competition of the fall season for the team.
Swimming and Diving: The swimming team opened its 2006-07 schedule with a trip to Purdue University to compete in the Indiana Intercollegiates. The Greyhound men finished in second as a team, earning 256 points and besting all but host Purdue. The UIndy women finished behind Purdue and Ball State, taking third place in the first meet of the season. Marios Panagi won the 50-yard freestyle at the meet and took runner-up in the 100 backstorke. Indianapolis will next compete in three weeks, hosting Ashland University to commence the conference season.
