Fall sports winding down, women's soccer in GLVC semis
The fall season winds down this week as three teams are in action. The winter schedule is just around the corner as Hoops with the Hounds kicks off the official start to the basketball season.
Women's Soccer: By virtue of a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks against Northern Kentucky on Sunday, the Greyhounds advanced to the semifinal round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. After 110 minutes and a scoreless tie, the teams dueled via shootout with the Greyhounds coming out on top. With the win, UIndy (14-4-1) travels to top-seeded Quincy to battle the Hawks on Friday. The winner will play SIU Edwardsville/Bellarmine in the championship match on Sunday. The Greyhounds were 1-0 winners at Quincy earlier in the year (10/8/06). Abby Tracy is the GLVC Player of the Week, marking the second straight UIndy player to win the honor after Sarah Jones won the award last week.
Volleyball: The Hounds (21-9, 9-5 GLVC) are wrapping up their conference schedule this week, playing their final two matches on the road this weekend. UIndy has already clinched a spot in the upcoming conference tournament, though its seeding is yet to be decided. Two wins would lock down the No. 4 seed for the Hounds, setting up a potential first round match up with Northern Kentucky, a team they defeated twice in the regular season. Senior Lynne Ross was one of three Greyhounds to record a double-double in Saturday's "Senior Day" victory over West Virginia State. In her final match at the Ruth Lilly Center, Ross set a career high with 13 blocks to go with her 10 kills. Junior Casey Chrzastowski also killed 10 balls and set a personal best in blocks with 10.
Football: The Greyhounds (5-3, 4-3 GLIAC) will look to keep the momentum after a big win at Wayne State, 39-14, last Saturday. UIndy finds itself in the NCAA Regional Rankings for the first time this season, appearing in the #12 slot in the Northwest Region. With three games remaining on the schedule, the Hounds will battle a pair of the league's perennial powerhouses in Saginaw Valley State (Oct. 28) and Northwood (Nov. 11). Craig Jenkins ran for a career-high 232 yards on the ground against Wayne State, with runs of 71 and 72 yards.
Basketball: The Greyhound basketball season is just around the corner. The first event of the season comes next Monday at the "Hoops with the Hounds" event at Nicoson Hall. The fun-filled night will be the first opportunity to meet the teams and see them compete in 3-point contests, a dunk contest and many other exciting games for fans.
