Fall sports head toward the stretch run
Key battles are on tap this week as the fall sports pass the halfway mark and jockey for position heading into the final weeks.
Football: Head Coach Joe Polizzi's team looks for its fifth straight win as it heads to Hillsdale on Saturday. The Greyhounds lead the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference (GLIAC) in scoring offense heading into the second half of the season. A key stretch of the schedule looms, with 3 of the next 4 on the road for UIndy with the one home game coming against #1 Grand Valley State.
Volleyball: Head Coach Jody Butera's squad is currently fourth in the GLVC with a 7-2 league record. With a seven-block performance on Saturday, team captain Lynne Ross went over 500 total blocks for her career, becoming only the third Greyhound to do so. The senior is only 23 blocks away from the all-time UIndy record. Ross is the only Greyhound to surpass both 1,000 career kills and 500 career blocks. The vollerballers head to Kansas City to face the 18th-ranked Rockhurst Hawks on Friday, Oct. 6.
Men's Soccer: Head Coach John Griffin has led the Greyhounds to an 11-3 overall mark thus far, tied for the school record for wins in a season. In the 26th season of UIndy men's soccer, only three other teams have etched 11 wins and this year's squad has done it with five games remaining in the regular season. Mar Wane, Brian Fishback and Josiah Mullen all scored goals to lead the Hounds to a 3-1 win over Findlay on Tuesday to etch the record-tying mark. The Hounds will battle #23 SIU Edwardsville and Quincy on the road this weekend.
Women's Soccer: Head Coach Drew Roff has his squad off to a 10-3 mark already this season, one win better than all of last season. The Greyhounds currently sit in a tie for third place in the race to host in the first round of the GLVC Championships on Oct. 22. The Hounds will have their hands full this week, heading to SIU Edwardsville on Friday, a team that sits just a half-game back of UIndy. On Sunday, UIndy will attempt to knock off #9 and unbeaten Quincy, who sits atop the conference standings.
Cross Country: Head Coach Kathy Casey's teams enjoyed success at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational hosted by Loyola University in Chicago last Saturday. Adam Settle finished in sixth place individually while LeAnn Sarka and Miranda Loney picked up ninth and tenth place finishes, respectively. Loney, a senior captain of the women's squad, was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Female Runner of the Week for her efforts. The final tuneup before the conference meet comes this weekend, when the Hounds compete in the Border Wars meet at SIU Edwardsville.
Men's Golf: Head Coach Brent Nicoson's squad finished in the top three yet again, tying for third place at the Murray State Invitational on Tuesday. The two teams that finished ahead of the Hounds were both NCAA Division I teams. Chris Clemens paced UIndy with a sixth-place showing individually. The team will end its fall schedule with a trip to Hawkshead Golf Course in O'Fallon, Mo. for the Riverman Invite next Monday and Tuesday.
Women's Golf: Head Coach Ken Piepenbrink's team just finished fifth at the William Bing-Beall Fall Classic in Findlay, Ohio over the weekend. Kristi Piepenbrink was the runner-up at the meet, two strokes off the pace. Sarah Prascsak finished seventh. The Hounds wrap up the fall schedule at the Nova Southeastern Fall Invite on Oct. 16-17.
Men's Tennis: Head Coach George Adams' team will host Marian and Taylor this Saturday to finish out the balance of the fall schedule. The Greyhounds competed at the Wright State Invitational last weekend. The annual alumni match is set for Sunday, Oct. 8.
Women's Tennis: Head Coach John Venter's team brought home lots of hardware at last weekend's Eastern Illinois Invite. Every player that saw the court brought home either a first or second place trophy in a very successful showing for the Greyhounds. The UIndy doubles teams were in top form, placing second in the A bracket and taking both first and second in the B bracket. UIndy will resume play in the spring.
