NCAA, conference tourneys overlap start to winter seasonWomen's soccer, volleyball continue seasons in respective tourneys
Women’s Soccer: The Greyhounds won its first Great Lakes Valley Conference title with a 1-0 win over Bellarmine in the championship match on Sunday. The Hounds did not allow a single goal in the three tournament games. The win improved UIndy’s record to 16-4-1. The Greyhounds also earned the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament bid, heading to top-ranked Grand Valley State to face No. 2 seed Mercyhurst in the opening round game on Friday. Volleyball: Two Greyhounds were rewarded with postseason accolades from the Great Lakes Valley Conference this week. Senior Lynne Ross was named to the All-GLVC Second Team while junior Casey Chrzastowski received All-GLVC honorable mention. Heading into the conference tournament, Ross leads the squad in kills (353), hitting percentage (.357) and blocks (138) while Chrzastowski is tops with 3.25 kills per game. For the second time in three years, UIndy earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming GLVC conference tournament. In the first round, the Greyhounds will face fifth-seeded Northern Kentucky at 5:00 pm on Nov. 2. UIndy defeated NKU in each of their two regular season meetings. Cross Country: The Greyhound harriers will compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Saturday at host Wisconsin-Parkside. The men are led by All-GLVC selection Adam Settle, who finished tenth at the conference championships. On the women's side, LeAnn Sarka was named All-GLVC after her tenth place showing at the league meet. More information on the Regional can be found here.
Women’s Basketball: UIndy will open its 2006-07 season on Nov. 3 with a trip to Assembly Hall to play Indiana University. Head Coach Teri Moren, now in her seventh season, returns an experienced group with five seniors. She has compiled an impressive 114-62 record during her tenure. Her .640 winning percentage ranks first in the program's history. In the GLVC preseason coaches poll, the Greyhounds were picked to finish fifth in the GLVC East Division. Last season's Greyhounds entered their names in the record books by starting the campaign with five straight wins, a program record for wins to start a season. Men’s Basketball: The Greyhounds have two NCAA Division I teams on the docket in the exhibition season, heading to Wright State on Thursday before a Nov. 10 date at Indiana. The Wright State game features a battle of former UIndy assistant coaches as Todd Sturgeon reunites with former Greyhound assistant Brad Brownell, who is in his first season as the head coach of the Raiders. Football: The gridders return home for their final two games of the season. Merychurst will be the opponent on Saturday, a team that has squeaked out victories in each of the last three meetings (all by 4 points or less). Several Hounds are eying possible record-breaking performances as the season winds down. Junior Craig Jenkins is on pace to break the all-time rushing mark at UIndy and needs 169 yards in the final two games to eclipse Mike Wishnevski's mark of 1,106 rushing yards, set back in 1980. Swimming & Diving: UIndy will host its first home event of the year as the Ashland Eagles visit Ruth Lilly Center Pool for a GLIAC meet. Sophomore Marios Panagi won the 50-yard freestyle at the season's first meet, the Indiana Intercollegiates at Purdue, finishing in 21.49 seconds. Alex Arestis earned third place in the event, clocking a 21.76 time. Panagi later took runner-up in the 100 backstroke with his 52.73 time. Isabela Tafur raced out to a 24.61 time in the 50-yard freestyle in the freshman's first collegiate meet. Holly Spohr was close behind, touching in 24.87 to finish in fifth place. Tafur and Spohr also finished in the top six in the 100 freestyle, as Tafur went 53.46 and Spohr clocked a 54.30 time for the Greyhounds. The Greyhound men finished in second as a team, earning 256 points and besting all but host Purdue. Wrestling: The grapplers will host an intrasquad meet on Friday, Nov. 3 prior to the official open of the season on Nov. 12 at Northwestern. All four Greyhound All-Americans from last season return this season. The wrestlers were recently selected as the nation's No. 7-ranked team in the College Wrestling Coaches' Association preseason poll. All four returning All-Americans are also ranked in their respective weight classes. Shane Perkey, at 133, appears third in the individual rankings. Charlie Pingleton is ranked No. 2 at 149.
