Fall sports off to a fast start

Men’s Soccer:  A non-conference tilt against Saginaw Valley State awaits the Greyhounds on Wednesday as the Hounds deal with their first loss of the season, suffered Sunday against nationally-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside.  Last Thursday, UIndy pulled off a landmark victory for the program, beating national power Lewis University, 2-1, for the Hounds’ first win over the Flyers since 1995.  UIndy sports a 6-1-0 overall mark.

Women’s Soccer: The Greyhounds briefly step outside of conference play on Wednesday, hosting in-region opponent Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday.  5-2-0 overall on the season, the Hounds begin a crucial stretch in their schedule, playing two of their final four road games next weekend followed by three straight GLVC matches at home.

Volleyball: The Greyhounds are riding their second five-match winning streak of the season, the latest culminating in a dominating 3-0 win over Marian on Monday in their last action.  Senior captain Lynne Ross led the charge, hitting a career match-high .714 with 11 kills and four blocks.  UIndy will look to build on its 2-0 conference record this weekend when they host Southern Indiana and SIU Edwardsville, on Friday and Saturday, respectively.  The Hounds are 10-3 overall.

Women’s Tennis:  Seven of the nine brackets contested (singles and doubles) in this past weekend’s GLVC Invitational were UIndy players, including Lindsey Fischer, who won at both No. 1 singles and doubles.  The Hounds swept all three doubles brackets and also boasted winners at No. 4 (#Jeannie Hartley), No. 5 (Aly Neidlinger) and No. 6 (Lindsey Loffer).  UIndy will head to Midland, Mich. for a three-day ITA tournament beginning on Friday.

Men’s Tennis:  The men’s tennis season officially gets underway this weekend as the Hounds travel to nearby Greencastle, Ind. for the GLVC Fall Invitational.  Head Coach George Adams welcomes back four letterwinners from last year’s team that finished third at the conference championships and made a second straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

Cross Country: The cross country teams return to action this week, competing in the Indiana Intercollegiates, an event which features over 30 schools from the state at all levels.  The event is scheduled to take place on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind.

Women’s Golf:  The Greyhounds were impressive at the Cardinal Classic at Ball State last weekend.  Amongst primarily NCAA Division I opponents, the Hounds finished seventh as a team out of the 18 teams participating.  Freshman Sarah Prascsak fired a 75 and 76 to finish fourth overall individually.  UIndy will take a week off before heading to Southern Indiana on Sep. 24.

Men’s Golf: Head Coach Brent Nicoson has wins in each of his team’s first two tournaments after his Hounds came back from a 10-stroke day-one deficit to win the Northern Kentucky Invite on Monday.  Justin Hueber took home medalist honors, beating out teammate Chris Clemens by a single stroke.

Football:  The Greyhounds are 1-1 after a 34-31 win over Michigan Tech in the home opener.  Junior Justin Russell was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after his performance last week.  The Lafayette, Ind. native tied a school record by catching four touchdowns in the win.  Junior quarterback Casey Gillin threw for a career high 329 yards.  UIndy travels to Gannon University on Saturday.  The Hounds are 2-0 all-time against the league’s newest member.
