Home events highlight busy weekend at UIndy

The University of Indianapolis athletics department will be at full steam this weekend, with eight home contests from Friday to Sunday.  The Greyhound soccer teams start the festivities on Friday with a doubleheader against Lewis University.  The volleyball team opens its 2006 home schedule, hosting Bellarmine on Friday and the Hounds' football squad will do the same by hosting Michigan Tech on Saturday.  The women's tennis team plays host to an individual tournament comprised of GLVC teams on Saturday and Sunday at the Indianapolis Tennis Center.

Men’s Soccer: The UIndy men’s soccer team is a perfect 5-0-0 and ranked #24 nationally to start the season.  Sophomore Brian Fishback was named the GLVC Player of the Week for the opening week after scoring three goals in the opening weekend of play.  Freshman Mar Wane recorded a hat trick in the Hounds’ 3-2 win over Bellarmine on Sunday.  The Greyhounds host a pair of undefeated squads in Lewis (Friday) and Wisconsin-Parkside (Sunday), both of whom are 4-0-0 entering this weekend.

Women’s Soccer: The #23 Greyhound women’s soccer team won its first four games, including a 2-1 win at Northern Kentucky, the first-ever win over NKU in the program’s history (1-11-1).  That win was the first by a Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent at NKU since 1998.  Senior Sarah Jones leads the squad with five goals through five games.  UIndy plays host to Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside this weekend.

Football:  The Greyhounds will try to shake off a 27-20 overtime loss from last Saturday when they host Michigan Tech at Key Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  The game will be offered via video webcast LIVE and free of charge through a partenership between the NCAA and CSTV.  Check the athletics.uindy.edu home page in the coming days for more details on this endeavor.

Volleyball: The UIndy volleyballers rattled-off five straight wins to open the season.  The team dropped decisions to defending national champion Grand Valley State and nationally-ranked North Alabama in a tough schedule at the Ashland tournament.  Senior Lynne Ross needs just 4 kills to etch 1,000 for her career.  The Greyhounds head to Indiana-Southeast on Wednesday before opening their home schedule on Friday (Bellarmine).

Women’s Golf:  Kristi Piepenbrink won medalist honors at each of the first two tournaments of 2006 and finished second at the GVSU Invite after forcing a playoff.  The sophomore has helped UIndy to a win, a second, and a fourth place finish early in the season.  The Greyhounds will be in action at Ball State on Saturday and Sunday.

Men’s Golf:  The Greyhounds hosted the annual UIndy Invite at Heartland Crossing on Tuesday and blasted the competition, winning by 14 strokes.  Chris Clemens took medalist honors, shooting a blistering 67.  Justin Hueber and Seth Fair each shot 69 to tie for second.  The Hounds will be at Northern Kentucky this weekend.

Cross Country:  The UIndy harriers placed 2nd (women’s) and 3rd (men’s) at the Wabash Hokum Karem.  Karen Bower and LeAnn Sarka finished second overall in the 2X2 mile relay while Miranda Loney and Ashley Clifford picked-up fifth place in the event.  On the men's side, the Hounds were led by Brad Robinson and Adam Settle, who recorded a time of 29:24.00 for a fifth-place finish.  Cody Parks and Kean Coy teamed-up to take 11th (30:21.00).  The Hounds will be off this weekend.

Women’s Tennis:  The Greyhounds fell to the #5 team in NCAA DIII (DePauw) and an NCAA DI opponent (IUPUI) to open the season.  UIndy will host the GLVC Individual Tournament at the Indianapolis Tennis Center, downtown, this Saturday and Sunday.
