Men's tennis takes close match against McKendree

The University of Indianapolis men's tennis team defeated future Great Lakes Valley Conference member McKendree, 5-4, in a tight match at the UIndy Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds (4-0) remain undefeated with the win over the Bearcats (0-2), which finished last season ranked No. 20 in the NAIA.

UIndy took the early lead in doubles with Christian Nikou and Matt Smith earning an 8-5 win at the top position, while Michael Bradley and Pete Wilson took an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Taking 2-of-3 in doubles proved crucial for the Greyhounds as singles was split with three wins apiece. UIndy's depth proved crucial as Alex Poe won 6-4, 6-1 over Davi Venditto at No. 5 and Preston Swain took the 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 against Doug Mennerick.

The key match proved to be at No. 2 singles where Caleb Fellers dominated a first set tiebreaker, 7-1, before cruising in the second set to defeat Paulo Goncalves 7-6 (1), 6-1.

UIndy returns to their tennis center next Saturday to host intra-city rival Marian at 5 p.m.
