ORLANDO --
The University of Indianapolis men's tennis team opened its Spring Break trip to Florida by falling in a close decision to NCAA Division I St. Joseph's (Pa.), 4-2, at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex.

The Greyhounds (7-2) and Hawks (3-9) were playing under Division I scoring rules where the team that wins 2-of-3 doubles matches gets one point, as opposed to Division II where each doubles match counts for one point.

UIndy took the early lead with a pair of decisive victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Preston Swain and Pete Wilson moved up to second doubles and won 8-2, while Trevor Cox and Alex Poe won 8-3. UIndy nearly earned the doubles sweep as Michael Bradley and Matt Smith went point-for-point with the Hawks at No. 1 before falling in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (4).

Taking the lead into singles, 1-0, UIndy was only able to win one more match, but a couple of others came down to the third set. Caleb Fellers earned the Hounds' second point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Khristian Broaddus at No. 2 singles.

Cox at No. 1, Nick Reinhart at No. 3 and Smith at No. 4 all were involved in three set matches as UIndy came close to taking down the D-I program from Philadelphia.

Cox fell 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 to Max Montague, while Reinhart lost to Devin Bostick 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. With the Hawks clinching the match with their fourth singles win, Smith's match was left unfinished at 3-2 in the third set.

The Greyhounds return to the court at 8 a.m. tomorrow against NCAA Division II Le Moyne (3-6) from Syracuse, N.Y., and the Northeast 10 Conference at Star Island Resort.
