INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team capped its spring slate with its annual Spring Game Saturday afternoon at Key Stadium. The Greyhounds (mostly) avoided the day's rain and thunderstorms, with Team White trumping Team Black, 24-14.
Â
With the weather and Easter Weekend limiting some of the day's festivities, the Hounds were still able to get in four quarters of football. With the roster pitting ones vs. ones and twos vs. twos, Team White scored the game's first 24 points and ultimately cruised to the win.
Â
"I thought our No. 1 offense was dynamic, and they have been all spring," said Head Coach
Chris Keevers. "Our offense is as good as it's been since I've been here."
Â
Two-time reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Year
Gavin Sukup is one of eight returners for this year's starting offense. He led Team White with a stellar day statistically, going a surgical 15-for-18 passing for 221 yards and two scores.
Â
He spread the love to eight different receivers, including a 49-yard bomb to
Anthony Crowell—the longest completion of the day.
Colton Wilkie had a three-yard touchdown catch to open the scoring, and
Kaleb Carver also hauled in a 3-yard TD pass in the second quarter.
Â
Team Black found much of its success on the ground, with
Juseters Fataki leading all players with 81 rushing yards on just nine carries. The team's scores came on a 30-yard touchdown pass from
Bailey Thacker to
Cayden Olinger in the third quarter, and a five-yard rushing TD by
Caleb Marcus late in the fourth.
Â
Defensively,
DJ Williams was credited with two of White's five sacks, while
Diego Piche earned a sack and a TFL for Black.
Kaleb Dotson and
Layton Moore each earned a pass break-up for Team Black, and Jerrell Franklin had a fumble recovery for White.
Â
In the kicking game,
Griffin McGee connected on the game's lone field goal attempt, splitting the uprights from 21 yards out.
Kyle Trilling was 2-for-2 in PAT tries, as was
Colin Seymour.
