Two-time GLVC Coach of the Year Brent Nicoson is continuing the proud tradition of men’s golf at the University of Indianapolis. In his first three years at the helm, Nicoson guided the Greyhounds to three NCAA appearances, a pair of conference titles, a regional championship, and two top-eight finishes at the NCAA D-II Championships.
Nicoson’s team is coming off a stellar 2008-09 season, especially at the conference level. After winning six regular-season tournaments, the Hounds won their second straight Great Lakes Valley crown in April with a three-round tournament-record score of 864.
Indianapolis horded the individual awards as well, as five Hounds garnered all-conference honors, Aaron Monson was dubbed the GLVC Freshman of the Year, and Nicoson and senior Justin Hueber each won the Coach and Player of the Year honors, respectively, for the second season.
A strong showing at the NCAA Super Regionals qualified the Hounds for the NCAA Finals. There, Indianapolis tied for sixth among the talented 20-team field, led by Monson’s top-five showing.
In 2007-08, Nicoson led his squad to a record-breaking 23-stroke win at the 2008 GLVC Championships. UIndy followed that performance by overcoming a nine-stroke deficit in the final round of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional to take the crown by two shots, and later went on to tie for eighth at nationals.
In his first season as the Greyhound head man, Nicoson led UIndy to a second-place finish at the 2007 Great Lakes Region, missing an invitation to the NCAA Finals by a single spot.
His inaugural squad amassed a stellar 134-23-6 record that included four tournament wins and an NCAA berth. The Hounds also put up an 18-4-1 ledger versus Division I schools. Individually, each of the top-five golfers compiled single-season averages that were among the top 25 all-time at UIndy.
A former Greyhound letterwinner, Nicoson is the Head Golf Professional at Dye's Walk Country Club in Greenwood, Ind., a position he has held since February 1996.
Nicoson was a three-year varsity golfer at Indianapolis, playing from 1992-94. He was the team captain of the 1994 squad. The Hounds won Great Lakes Valley Conference titles in 1992 and 1993, the last of six straight league crowns.
Nicoson's grandfather, the late Angus Nicoson, had been athletic director and basketball coach at the school for 30 years. The 4,000-capacity gym on campus was renamed "Nicoson Hall", in honor of Angus Nicoson, who had announced he was taking a disability retirement in the spring of 1977. Dan Nicoson, Brent's father, was an assistant football coach at Indiana Central. His 1975 team remains the only gridiron team in school history to make the playoffs, qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs after an 8-2 regular season ledger. The team was inducted into the University of Indianapolis Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
As a player, Brent Nicoson has qualified for the Indiana Open six times, including making the cut most recently in 2003. As a student, Nicoson boasted a 3.45 GPA at the University of Indianapolis, graduating in 1994 with a bachelor's in business administration. A member of the Dean's List and the Honor Roll, he also was part of the Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society in Business Administration. He was the recipient of the Indianapolis Kiwanis Club Scholarship while a student at the school. Nicoson becomes just the second men's golf coach in the past four decades, succeeding Ken Partridge, who stepped down following the 2006 spring season - his 40th as head men's golf coach.
