WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-
Isabela Tafur and
Manuel Stiem each registered wins to highlight UIndy's performance in its season-opening meet at the Indiana Intercollegiates Saturday at Purdue. Each swimmer also added a runner-up finish as well, helping the Hounds to third place showings in the team rankings among the field of NCAA Division I schools (Purdue, Ball State, IUPUI).
Tafur's win came in the 100-yard freestyle with a 52.48 clocking. She also took runner-up honors in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 24.62, just under a second behind Purdue's Ariel Martin.
Erica Smith also had a second-place showing, going 58.07 in the 100 butterfly.
Meghan Donahue finished fourth in the 100 backstroke with a 1:01.14 time.
Stiem won the 200-yard individual medley, outdistancing the field by nearly four full seconds. The junior transfer clocked a 1:53.43 time in the win while teammate
Austin Biefnes took fifth with a 2:00.03 effort. He was second in the 100 breaststroke, an event that featured four Hounds in the top eight: Stiem,
Tyler Kennedy- 5th,
Eric Mundt- 6th and Biefnes- 8th. Senior
Alex Arestis was second in the 100 free, marking a 47.58 time.
Marios Panagi had a 53.09 finish in the 100 backstroke, good for third place.
Alican Alacli and
Baris Ilhan were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 500 freestyle.
The Greyhounds will next compete in nearly two weeks when they host Ashland, Wayne State and Truman State at Ruth Lilly Center Pool. The two-day event starts at 6:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
