Canary & Meissel combine for 50 in win

Box score
UIndy 88, Oakland City 72

OAKLAND CITY, Ind.- Junior Jessica Canary and sophomore Samantha Meissel each notched 20-point games Wednesday night as the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team earned its sixth victory in as many games with a 88-72 road win against Oakland City at the Johnson Center. Canary poured in 24 points, including a career-high five three-pointers, and Meissel scored 26 to help pull away from a pesky Lady Oaks squad.

Led by senior Chelsea Miller, the Lady Oaks (1-2) shot a blistering 58% in the first half. Miller hit all six of her first-half field goals, with five coming from behind the three-point arc.

Despite Miller's effort, OCU trailed by four at the break. With the Hounds down one just before intermission, Meissel hit a three with about five seconds left and junior Katie Dewey stole the ensuing in-bounds pass for a quick deuce to beat the buzzer.

On the Oaks' first possession after the break, Miller connected again from long distance for her 18th, 19th and 20th points, cutting the lead to one. Later, OCU trailed 53-51 with about 15 minutes to go, but UIndy managed a 10-2 run, capped by back-to-back threes from Meissel and Canary, to give the Greyhounds their first double-digit lead. Oakland City would not get within striking distance again as the Hounds went on to the 16-point victory.

Canary nailed four of her five triples in the second half as the all-conference performer tallied 18 points after the break. She finished the game shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-9 from behind the arc while adding five rebounds and six assists.

Meissel's point total was one short of her personal best. The Terre Haute, Ind. product went 10-for-14 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. Dewey added seven assists and Hillary Wenning scored nine while both had four boards.

Miller led the Lady Oaks with 21 points.

After opening the season with six straight games away from home, UIndy hosts Tiffin in its 2008-09 home opener Saturday, Nov. 22 at 5:30 pm.
