Swimming and Diving: The Greyhound swimming and diving teams embarked on the two-day House of Champions Invite, contested at the IU Natatorium downtown Friday and Saturday. The meet featured predominantly NCAA Division I teams including Ball State, Butler, Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and host IUPUI. 15 of the 40 events were won by UIndy athletes. Manuel Stiem (100 butterfly) and Alican Alacli (1,650 freestyle) each grabbed NCAA A-cut time standards during the meet and three men's relays punched their ticket to nationals with qualifying times in impressive wins. The men finished in second place while the women took fourth at the event. UIndy will break from competition for the next month before returning home to host the UIndy Invitational Jan. 9-10 at Ruth Lilly Center Pool.
Indoor Track and Field: The Greyhound track and field season officially got underway Saturday at the Early Bird Open hosted by Illinois State University. A limited squad of Hound participants competed in the event, the lone meet of the Fall Semester. Highlights for UIndy included senior Emily Schaf's finish in the high jump, as she cleared 1.65 meters on her first attempt to take second place. Krista Leffers advanced to the finals on the 60-meter hurdles, crossing in 9.55 in for fifth place. Bryan Back was second in the high jump as he cleared the 1.91-meter bar on his third and final attempt at that height. UIndy will break for the semester and will return to competition on Jan. 10 with the Indiana Open Series at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Women's Basketball: The Greyhounds earned their ninth victory of the season with a gutty 78-69 win over Bellarmine Saturday night. UIndy (9-2, 1-1 GLVC) fought back from a 10-point second-half deficit thanks to Jessica Canary's efforts. The junior guard poured-in 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the second half alone to help the Hounds shrug off a two-point loss to No. 1 Northern Kentucky two days prior. The Hounds had the defending champs on the ropes but NKU squeaked out a win, giving the Norse three wins of two points or less in the past two seasons against UIndy. The Greyhounds face Central State in their lone action this week, tipping at 2:00 p.m. Saturday from Wilberforce, Ohio.
Men's Basketball: The Hounds dropped their opening pair of league contests last week, falling to Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Junior Sergey Struck made his first start of the season, scoring 11 points in Saturday's loss. Tristan Rogers led the Hounds with 17 points Saturday while Keith Radcliff had 17 to lead all scorers Thursday vs. NKU. UIndy (1-5, 0-2 GLVC) will play its next two games in Phillippi, W.V. as the Hounds battle Salem International Saturday and play host Alderson-Broaddus Sunday.
Wrestling: The UIndy wrestling team had a grappler place at least sixth in all 10 weight classes at the 49th annual Little State match, held Friday and Saturday at Wabash College. Junior Matt Irwin highlighted the Greyhound finishes, taking top honors in the 141 bracket. The Hounds had three more wrestlers finish runner-up in their respective bracket as Ethan Harris turned the trick in the 133 class and J.T. Jenkins in the 174 class and Cory Fornal did so in the 157 bracket after winning his first three bouts via major decisions. Jake Holler wrestled unattached and took second place, posting a pair of pins on the tournament. UIndy returns to the mat this Saturday, heading to the Ohio Northern Invitational.
