UIndy announces changes in wrestling program

Long-time Greyhound Head Coach, Assistant to lead squad in 2008-09 season

INDIANAPOLIS — The University of Indianapolis has named Terry Wetherald its Interim Head Wrestling Coach and Kyle Fellure (pronounced fell-OOR) Interim Director of Wrestling Operations, announced by Director of Athletics Dr. Sue Willey Monday.   Wetherald has coached the Greyhounds in 31 of the varsity sports' 52 years of existence.  Fellure, an Assistant Coach with the Greyhounds for the past seven seasons, will also help lead the wrestling program following the departure of former head coach Jay Yates.

“We are most grateful to Terry Wetherald who has agreed to come out of retirement to serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season,” Willey said. "Terry has a major interest in making sure the program continues to move forward in a positive manner.  He will oversee the assistant coaching staff and the daily practices, etc.  We also appreciate Kyle Fellure's willingness to step up and take a greater leadership role in the overall operations of the wrestling program.  We feel very confident the 2008-2009 wrestling team will continue to strive for excellence both on the mat and in the classroom."

Wetherald first took the reigns of the wrestling program at then-Indiana Central College in 1971 and was the face of the program for the next three decades.  Wetherald mentored 20 All-American wrestlers in his tenure as the Hounds made the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II status.  He posted 222 dual wins in his 31 seasons as head coach, tutoring 39 National Qualifiers in that span.  Wetherald was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996 and the wrestling room at UIndy is co-named in his honor (Velez/Wetherald Wrestling Room).

“It is my desire to assist with the UIndy wrestling team in any way possible,” Wetherald said.  “Like the administration, my main concern is that these young men continue to compete at the highest level and are provided the support necessary to carry on the successful tradition of UIndy wrestling.”

Fellure, a former letterwinner at UIndy, currently serves as the team's Recruiting Coordinator.  The Brookville, Ind. native and Franklin County High School product serves on the Indiana State Wrestling Association Board of Directors as the director of Section 3.

A national search for UIndy's next head coach will be conducted at the conclusion of the current season.
