OWENSBORO, Ky.- The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team overcame sub-par shooting with timely threes and a season-low nine turnovers to outlast Kentucky Wesleyan 61-51 at the Owensboro Sportscenter Friday night. Junior
Jessica Canary drained five triples on the way to a game-high 23 points.
Leading scorer
Samantha Meissel got the Hounds on the board with a three-pointer on UIndy's second possession. The 6-2 forward struggled with her shot the rest of the way, however, and finished with nine points on 3-of-13 shooting.
KWC (6-6, 1-2 GLVC) never led in the first twenty minutes but also never got down by more than five points. After a three-point play from
Sarah Fenneman with 5:54 to go in the half, UIndy endured a field goal drought that lasted the remainder of the period.
Still leading 28-25 at the break, UIndy finished the half shooting just 9-for-26 (.385) from the floor, but Canary and
Sarah Fenneman escaped the bug by combining for 17 points first-half points.
Up 30-27 early in the second,
Jessica Canary ran down an offensive rebound and nailed a big three to create some space for the Hounds.
Katie Lyons made a tough turn-around to put them up eight as UIndy looked to keep the momentum.
But the Greyhounds came up empty on the next couple possessions. Meanwhile, the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run to cut the margin back down to two, but Canary extended the advantage again with another triple.
Isabell Rhenwrick sandwiched a KWC bucket with a pair of jumpers to make it 35-42 Hounds at the 13-minute mark.
UIndy (13-2, 2-1) earned its first double-digit lead after
Katie Dewey stole the ball and found Canary in the corner for her fourth three-pointer of the night, upping the deficit to 12.
With nine minutes to go, the Panthers made one more strong push by scoring six straight, but UIndy kept them at arm's length with a lay-up from
Caroline Schutzman and later a trey from
Heather Rourk. The danger came from none other than Canary as her ffith and final three upped the lead to 13 with just 1:59 to go.
Canary finished 7-for-13 from the floor and fell just a single point shy of her career high. Dewey totaled five points, five assists and four steals while Rhenwrick added six boards and three assists.
UIndy travels to Evansville, Ind. for a rare Sunday conference game at Southern Indiana. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
