Meissel perfect in blowout win

BOX SCORE

INDIANAPOLIS – With a flawless 10-for-10 effort from the floor, University of Indianapolis sophomore Samantha Meissel amassed 25 points in just 19 minutes to lift the UIndy women's basketball team past Saint Joseph's, 85-48, Saturday evening at Nicoson Hall.

Meissel's offensive performance featured the most made field goals without a miss by a GLVC woman in over two years.  The 6-2 forward poured in 19 points before halftime while scoring 12 in just the first 4:16 alone.

Despite Meissel's initial outburst, the Pumas managed to remain close, as a Natalie Appelhans jumper made it 12-12 at the 16-minute mark.  The Greyhounds stepped on the gas from that point, however, by running off 16 straight, a span that featured back-to-back threes from Katie Dewey and Caroline Schutzman.

SJC (0-20, 0-11 GLVC) got the margin down to 10 on a couple of occasions before the Greyhounds upped the lead to 44-27 at the break.  Indianapolis shot a robust 59 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes while limiting its turnover total to seven.

After the opponents traded buckets early in the second half, the Greyhounds (19-5, 8-4) used another huge rally to distance themselves ever further.  With the score 50-32 and 17:45 remaining, UIndy orchestrated a crippling 30-4 surge over the next 12-plus minutes to put the game well out of reach.  The resulting 44-point advantage marked a game-high shortly before the Hounds went on to the 85-48 win.

The blowout victory was the fifth time this season the Greyhounds have won by 30 or more points.  Junior Jessica Canary joined Meissel in double figures with 11 points while also tying four other Hounds for the team lead with four rebounds.  Dewey chipped in nine points and three steals and Isabell Rhenwrick compiled six assists, four boards and three steals.

One win shy of a second straight 20-win season, UIndy has this coming Thursday off before heading to Highland Heights, Ky. for a showdown with second-ranked Northern Kentucky Saturday, Feb. 7.  The Hounds enter play next week 1 ½ games behind East Division co-leaders NKU and UW-Parkside.

Note:  SJC has now lost 40 consecutive games overall, including 31 straight to conference opponents.
