INDIANAPOLIS- The 12th-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team garnered a hard-earned win over visiting Taylor University – 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 – at the Ruth Lilly Center Tuesday night. The win was a special one for junior
Lyndsay Callahan, as her 12 kills lifted her career total over 1,000.
Callahan became just the seventh Greyhound to reach the 1,000-kill plateau. She finished the night with a .345 hitting percentage with 12 kills and 11 digs. The outside hitter and co-captain is now one of four Greyhounds to amass over 1,00 kills and 1,000 digs in a career.
Concerning the match itself, UIndy had won 24 straight sets heading into the contest with the Lady Trojans(20-4). That streak came to an end in Tuesday's third frame, but not before the Greyhounds tied the school record for most consecutive sets won (26), set back in 2004.
The Greyhounds (23-1) hit a blistering .586 in the opening set as the visitors would not get closer than four from the midpoint on. That turned out to be the exception, however, as the Trojans would buckle down and give the Greyhounds their toughest match in a few weeks.
Taylor, the 23rd-ranked team in the latest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) poll, had its host down 20-11 in the second, thanks to a 7-0 run midway through. Despite the daunting margin, UIndy responded with a run of its own, holding the Trojans to just three points the rest of the way while scoring the needed 14 points to put Taylor in an 0-2 hole.
Taylor out-hit Indianapolis .209 to .120 in third frame, helping break the Hounds' streak of set wins. The Lady Trojans rallied to take a 17-8 lead, including scoring nine of the first 10 points. UIndy would cut it to three at 19-16 but couldn't quite get over the hump, as Taylor took its first and ultimately only set.
Like the previous two frames, the fourth set did not lack drama. The Trojans again took the early lead, this time at 7-3, but the Hounds came just back to knot it at eight apiece.
Though it marked one of seven ties in the set, the Hounds would not relinquish the lead from that point. The opponents battled to a 17-17 tie, but the Hounds stayed one step ahead of the Trojans in the race to 25, as UIndy would ultimately take the set by a 25-22 count to earn the win.
In addition to Callahan's performance, UIndy received strong statistical outputs from several players. Junior setter
Cheneta Morrison hit a team-high .364 to go with 43 assists, 12 kills, eight digs, four block assists and three aces.
Kourtney Crawford and
Kristina Kerrigan also tallied 12 kills,
Courtney Anglemyer and
Hannah Kelzer both had four blocks, and
Kyleigh Turner recorded a match-high 22 digs. Also, freshman DS
Amy Telezyn garnered personal bests with three sets played and seven digs.
More tough competition awaits UIndy at the 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover in Lansing, Mich. The Hounds are scheduled to face GLIAC-powers Northern Michigan, No. 23 Hillsdale and Saginaw Valley State this weekend, starting with NMU Friday at 11 a.m.
