Greyhounds shine at first day of Crossover

Box scores
UIndy 3, Northern Michigan 1
UIndy 3, Hillsdale 2

DIMONDALE, Mich.- The 12th-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team went 2-for-2 in the opening day at the 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover.  After a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-12) versus Northern Michigan in the morning, UIndy put an exclamation point its day with a five-set, come-from-behind win (26-24,20-25,20-25,25-22,15-5) against No. 23 Hillsdale in the nightcap.

MATCH 1
The Greyhounds took the opening two sets to push Northern Michigan to the brink.  The Hounds hit a .450 hitting to help earn the 2-0 advantage, including hitting lofty .515 in the opener.

The Wildcats (12-8) won a close third frame to extend the match.  The Hounds led 20-17 but NMU finished strong with an 8-3 run to force a fourth set.

The final frame lacked the intrigue of its successor, however, as the Greyhounds stifled the Wildcat offensive by limiting its hitting efficiency to an even .000 (6 K, 6 E, 39 TA).  With the score 7-6 Hounds, an ace and three NMU attack errors off the serve of  Courtney Anglemyer helped fuel a 5-0 run for UIndy.  The Greyhounds out-scored their opponents by more than two to one from that point, going on to the 25-12 match-clinching win.

A bevy of Greyhounds compiled strong hitting percentages, including Anglemyer (.438), Lyndsay Callahan (.414), Kristina Kerrigan (.386), Hannah Kelzer (.385), and Cheneta Morrison (.333).

Kerrigan led all players with 19 kills – on her 19th birthday, no less.  Callahan finished with 15 kills and 19 digs, Kelzer added five block assists, while Kyleigh Turner garnered 31 digs, with 10 coming in the fourth set alone.

MATCH 2

The second match marked just the third five-set contest the Hounds have endured this season. The opponents combined for 179 digs and 15 blocks to help keep the hitting percentages relatively low, but UIndy broke through with a .321 percentage in the final two sets, including a gaudy .500 in set five.

Hillsdale (17-4) dropped the first set but came back to win the next two to put the pressure back on UIndy.

With the score 15-14 Chargers in the fourth, the Greyhounds scored four straight to take the lead and force a timeout.  Indianapolis did not relinquish the lead from that point, shaking off a late 3-0 run from Hillsdale to knot it at two sets apiece.

A reenergized Greyhound squad came out swinging in the fifth by scoring nine of the first 11 points.  The UIndy momentum proved unstoppable as the Hounds, who committed just one fifth-set attack error on 12 swings, punctuated the victory with a 6-0 rally to earn its third win of the year versus a ranked team.

Five Greyhounds recorded at least 12 digs, as their team total of 95 marked a season high.  Turner led the back-row players with 28 digs, followed by Amy Telezyn with 14 and Amy Oldenburg with 13.

Callahan and Kerrigan combined for 26 kills in the match, with Callahan adding 12 digs.  Morrison registered 46 assists and 17 digs, while Kristina Hefferan hit at a .400 clip with seven kills.

Play at the 30-team Crossover continues tomorrow as UIndy faces Saginaw Valley State at 12:30 pm, its only match of the day.
