INDIANAPOLIS- The 12th-ranked University of Indianapolis volleyball team marked another tally in the win column with a sweep over GLVC-newcomer Illinois-Springfield Friday night at the Ruth Lilly Center. UIndy downed the visiting Prairie Stars by scores of 25-13, 25-13, and 25-16 to up its record to 4-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and 18-1 overall.
The Greyhounds had little trouble with the Prairie Stars. UIS (6-11, 0-5 GLVC) earned a 4-3 lead early in the first, but the Hounds ran off five straight to force a timeout. UIndy led by no less than two from that point and later used a 12-3 run to cruise to a one-set-to-none advantage.
More of the same awaited the Stars in the second set. This time, Indianapolis scored three in a row to start the game on back-to-back kills from sophomore
Kristina Hefferan and one from junior
Cheneta Morrison, and ultimately didn't let the visitors as much as tie it.
UIndy bookended the set with another mini-run by scoring the last five points of the frame, including the final four on the serve of sophomore
Kara McCarthy.
After hitting over .400 in each of the first two sets, UIndy looked to notch its 12th sweep victory of the year. Down 17-9, Springfield scored five of seven to sneak back to within four at 18-14, but the Hounds allowed just two more points on the way to the win.
Morrison filled up the box score with 28 assists, 11 digs and eight kills. The versatile setter (pictured) also added two block assists and hit a match-high .800. Sophomore middles
Courtney Anglemyer and
Hannah Kelzer combined for 14 kills and seven total blocks, and senior
Kyleigh Turner totaled 18 digs while freshman
Amy Oldenburg added 10 of her own.
Also, freshman
Kourtney Crawford earned her first collegiate start tonight, garnering 16 attack attempts while amassing six kills and a block assist.
The Quincy Lady Hawks come calling tomorrow for another GLVC match. Start time from the Ruth Lilly Center is scheduled for 3 p.m.
